I have just completed a dayskipper course at Bisham Abbey. Other than an excuse to take a week off work it was a most enjoyable, often taxing and thoroughly worthwhile week.

I now need to obtain some more practical experience as quickly as possible and can recommend such a course most highly as I now feel that now have a far greater degree of theoretical knowledge to build upon.

Go on ask me a question ....................

Ok I know the answer to that one.

Be patient and it will arrive....I promise it won't take as long as my dinghy....

Glad you enjoyed it. I took mine a few years ago now at evening classes. Is it still raggie orientated. I remember one of the first exercises was to name the parts of a sailing yacht. I was one of the only 'motorboaties' there and one of the only people to get them all right!

So ask you a question eh! right...........erm............'ang about...........right 'eres one. Explain the characteristics of an occulting light and an isophase light and describe the differences between them? Thats one of the questions in the final exam that I did.

Sort of stumbled across a Wetline 265 RIB which was gathering dust and they needed the space so did a really good deal. They also had a 265 slatted floor and a 3M+ inflatable floor I think looking for new homes and seemingly going cheap...

I may have hinted both at home and on the forum that I was after a dinghy ( I was probably a little too low key in my approach....) But it was left to me to snif the thing out.....

Hi Syd

A. Deviation = The effect of interferance from within a boat on its compass

B. Variation = the diffreance between true and magnetic North

C. Specimen = should be taken within a nautical context ie Joanne says to me when I mess someting up on boat or elsewhere "Nick you are a pathetic SPECIMEN"

Interestingly question C did not appear within the sylabus but I have answered to the best of my ability using a real life example of its usage .

A. An occulting light is a light where the total duration of light is longer than the total duration of darkness and an isophase light is where the duration of light and dark are equal. Therefore the pattern of light / dark for each will be noticibly different.

(All right Joanne did help me a bit here Barry)

Overall the course was excellent and I guess that there really is only so much that can be got across and absorbed in the space of one week.

Points like this illustrate the importance of following up with some sort of practical sea based course which I intend to do.

Very impressive Nick (& Joanne), although I am a little disapointed you failed to answer question 'C' correctly.

A 'Specimen' is an Italian astranaut.

Now don't you forget it.

Congratulations by the way.

Syd :)

I hated doing the day skipper course. Both me and Tutts dreaded Monday nights. Whether it was the teacher who kept going off at a tangent, reminising, then back to course work without you realising, or the fact that we had all ready been to Ireland and Scotland a dozen times and never needed to know 99% of the info. Cant remember any of it now except cardinal buoys. Never tod us a thing about te important things like overfalls. Wind over tide or how to trim the boat. These things are important. Not knowing the exact amout of water in a secondary port at a given time. Never ever needed to know that. Pilot book tells me. Park here or there. Or just look on chart to see if it dries. In reality you never do any sums. Some of the info is good for saily boats, but at twenty knots the effect of wind this way or tide that way is irelivant to your position. Now droping a fag on your lap could really cock the navigation figures up!!
