Day Skipper practical recommendations

I'm planning to do my Day Skipper practical probably in September and would like to do it in warm weather. I also want to do the tidal course so presumably this means I'm pretty much restricted to sailing schools on the Algarve. Does anybody have any experience/recommendations for schools in the area?

www.learn2sail.com, a new set-up in Ramsgate and also in the Algarve where one boat is based. Very nice people (I confess, the owners are friends of mine) and they are doing well.

I did my Day Skipper Practical (tidal) with Trafalgar Sailing in Gibraltar. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I can second Gib. I did mine with All Aboard. Lots of tital experience across the straits to Morocco. It's a great holiday too.

Good people/boats and instructors and La Gomera is unspoilt.

depends what you mean by warm - it can be nice & warm in Devon in September - I did mine with Plain Sailing out of Brixham

Why not look at the RYA web site, but there are schools in Portugal, the USA, and even Australia which do RYA courses.

Haven't been to the Algarve but have been to Gib & wouldn't recommend it - we did a week's course there for the weather, hated Gib itself & found the sailing fairly dull. Might have been bad tuition, but Portugal sounds much nicer.

All Abroad in Gibralta .. Had a great time .. Nice bay to play in if its windy .. North Africa is 15nm away so a nice sail ..

Falmouth is better: go with TrySail ... you might even be lucky and do your course on Tigger.

Of course, being the South West brilliant weather, balmy sailing and amazing scenery is guaranteed /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

Or if you're going to do it in Falmouth, go with Classic Sailing on Eve of St Mawes, and learn about gaff rig as well.

I did my Yachtmasters with them and SWMBO did Competent Crew. 2 of their Dayskippers crewed for my Yachtmaster exam.

Jules and Rob are two of the nicest people in the world and, if you dont get things, Rob will find a way. You will also almost certainly end up with 2 new friends.

I very rarely recommend anyone, but I have no hesitation with rusailing!!

Many thanks for the suggestions. I know what you mean about Gib - I've been there in the dim & distant and that banished any desire I may have to go back again.

Plenty of suggestions - now I'll check them out on the Interweb thingy.
