Apart from the cost differential what do you guys think are the main advantages/disadvantages of snap davits over conventional davits?

weight and cost are the main advantages of the snap davits. Main disadvantage is that you end up with a boat across the stern, which makes stern-to berthing interesting, and restrictes the size of your tender, cause you dont want it sticking out either side of your hull.

I am looking at using a crane and putting the boat on blocks that hinge into the wet locker on the bathing platform when not in use.

Dont know if this is a good option? what do people think?

The cost will be the same as normal davits I beleive.

Mine had conventional straight davits and was a real pain in getting the dingy up onto the bathing platform.
Swapped for a pair of snap davits and very much better. Getting the dingy on and off is very much easier. Also holds it steady when boarding. Avoids having a big weight hung out the back end.
Snap davits get my vote every time.
PS IBS sell ones that are a hell of a lot cheaper than the all stainless ones and work just as well.

The snap davits solution looks more rigid. I had conventionals on an earlier boat and was always tightening it down. The conventional davits also got in the way stern to mooring but probably not quite as much as the snaps.
I don't bother now with either. I just stowe the inflatable away and have a £60 electric pump. Incidently, I have an independant liferaft.

One thing I overlooked was that traditional davits increased the length of my boat hence larger mooring fees because I am charged per foot.

Yep. Same trouble with extra length, got away with it for a while! Think it depends about size of boat. I would not touch snap davits as have to take outboard off first. But proper davits on smaller boats would look daft and would probably tip the thing up!! Need to decide for yourself. or new crain thingy as on newer boats. But then need smaller boat with giant swim platform to accomodate.

I've got one of the Viking Carbon Fibre Cranes on our F43, works really well and lifts Zodiac Jet Rib a treat onto fixed chocks, rear locker not suitable for fold outs.
Manual not electric so needed slight modification to the number of pulleys to ensure less damage to my old heart, winding it up. Crane only weighs 15kgs or so and fully removable so in short. Brilliant, they are showing at LBS, so poss chance of a deal?? PM me for more details, no's etc.

I saved about £350 PA by removing my davits at PH. And another thing davits look so messy and unsightly/untidy in my opinion.

Thanks for the PM and information.

I have also looked at the whittal boat cranes in Stainless Steel, so it will be a good compraision on quality/cost.

Once again, thanks and I will also see them at LBS
