Hi,
I wondered if anyone has been able to get through the Dardanelles in Walton backwaters recently? I tried to get through last year following the route on the chart as best I could, but the south end appeared blocked; it's quite likely that my pilotage wasn't up to scratch or is it now not possible to go all the way through?

It would be interesting to know why the channel is called the Dardenelles (if any one now knows). I guess there may be a First War connection, but what?

A chap in the marina who says he's been at Titchmarsh close to 30 years says the channel was always through there, ie turn left out of the marina then sharp right, but so much water was going that way they dammed it off some years ago, and you can see the dam on Google Earth close to the marina. I have been over it in my kayak but it's a very high HW thing only I think. I noticed the half sized barge come up Dardanelles Creek a couple of weeks ago and anchor some way back from the dam.

That makes sense, it did look quite like a man made block and as you say on google earth it is very obviously dammed.
Many thanks for the conformation
