Does the forum know if there is any governing body that deals with boat yards...(not marinas) that are a positive health hazard...ie broken glass...extremely dangerous electrics....20ft drops to pontoons at low tides....dangerous buildings etc etc etc

Why? Are you looking to give somebody a hard time?

Perhaps you should wait until someone injures or kills themselves and then say that hindsight thing we always hear.

Not!!!!

Report them it could be your life you save, if not mine, if your being over cautious the authorities won't do anything and no harm would have been done.

What pray did I do to warrant that little vitriolic outburst? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

so far one arm has been broken by yard machinery being left around.....workshop doors have fallen off that would have killed not injured...no lights at night time

the yards moorings are cheap but someone is going to get killed soon...better to pre-empt rather than look back with hindsight....

Your local council Heath and Safety Dept is the place to go first. If it's not under their jurisdiction and I would think this is, they will point you in the right direction.

Councils are responsible for health and safety at work if the business is:

* Office-based
* Shops
* Consumer services
* Hotel and catering
* Sports or leisure
* Coin-operated laundrettes
* Undertakers
* Residential accommodation (excluding nursing homes)
* Concerned with places of worship
* Pre-school childcare
* Warehousing

For all other types of business it will be the regional office of the Health and Safety Executive

OK, but before bringing in the big guns, have you, or anybody voiced your concerns to the yard management?

Why not talk to them yourself?

If it's as bad as you say calling in the big guns will end up with them being shut down or having all the usual bull**** imposed on them resulting in increased charges.

Maybe you could explain your concerns and they could get things sorted out without all the hassle of the H&S pen pushers.

Edited. Humph. Chrusty beat me to it!... and a fine point it was too.

I would urge caution here though! Now I have no knowledge of the place concerned or the particular hazards, but I'm the kind of guy who likes cheap moorings and who is prepared to put up with a lot to use them. I used to like scrapyards where I could climb around the piles of dead cars looking for what I wanted but was also happy to accept the risks that went with that freedom. I don't have that choice now thanks to "Elf & safety".

Obviously, if I'm paying £££££ per foot, I'd expect high standards of everything (not just safety), but if I'm only paying ££, I'd expect less. If there's a sign up saying "This place is dirt cheap but everything's knackered - use it at your own risk", I'd still like to have that choice!

There is a difference between complaining and having a friendly word............I have an inbuilt distaste, for going behind peoples backs, something that does occur though, if as the poster said, somebody has suffered a broken arm because of alleged carelessness or bad practice? Would that not have been investigated at the time?

All this whispering down the telephone to big brother, is fairly typical of how things seem to be done these days, and sometimes it's because people just don't want to accept responsibilty for their own actions. I am not saying that this is the case in this instance, as I don't know the facts of the matter.

From the sounds of it, the owner has no interest in maintaining the yard, if the Elfin arrive he might just say pheck it and sell the yard off to a developer or just lock the gates. No boat yard.

There is always the option of all the owners giving up a Sunday and tidying up after themselves no?

Sorry, don't know why I said that, slappy wrists, community spirit, pah!

If the yard is spick and spam, you may at least get some of the other work done as it will look easier to the owner, as a devils advocate, it seems to be someone else's problem, which is it seems just causing apathy all around.
