On the news to day.Appaently the police have caught red handed people taking the test for attaining the permissons to use a 12 mtre vessel in Spain, using information sent to them in real time thru an ear piece. So there could be many Spanish yachts out there in the hands of somwone who could not pass the test but had a few thousand euros.

I think I've met their British contingent already !

Still, they deserve a few points for initiative; though I can't help thinking of the scene from 'Roxanne' when Steve Martin is feeding chat up lines via earpiece to a dumb fireman, who repeats them parrot fashion to the object of his desire, until interference cuts in; " your eyes are like...THERE'S A 10/25 GOING DOWN ON MAIN STREET !!! "

Most of them just buy a UK flagged boat and tell porkies to keep it on the register and avoid taxes. That way they don't have to learn anything.

Well, I am not surprised.
Chartwork, Navigation and Pilotage to them seem to be arcanities....no idea about current, tide, and leeway or plotting or variation and deviation or anything, funny.:D

Do you think that all British sailors are competant ?

Thank god for that as if they had been any good as seaman they would have been explorers and have colonies and may other countries would be speaking spanish!

My op refered to some scrotes who thought they could buy a licence.I think that its has been shown that Spanish yachtsmen are excellent sailers with a good history of yachtracing etc especially back in the 60 when there where races to Sandander from Brixham and the Royal Family has maintained and encouraged the countries links with the sea, although in general yachtingb is seen as a very rich mans sport.Haviing said that I dont think we should foget that we are superior.....we beat the pants off the ARMADA!!!!

What you should not forget is how ungrateful you are with the nation you are living in saying those stupid arguments and scaring people saying "danger in Spain". Moreover, dont forget that here in Spain, even to sail a 17 feet daysailer you need to pass an exam and that means 100% of boats on water have a competent skipper. Can you say the same about Uk?

Of course there are always silly people who try to cheat, but what is that? A 1% of the sailing population? If you had compulsory exams there somehow you would have the same there.

And to finish, remember this forum is read by people from other countries and these comments make no good to the forum.

Which makes that forum a most interesting in vivo psychological study of british maritime fauna...

UK uses the Darwinian principle to ensure sailors are qualified.

Strong tidal streams, big tidal ranges, heavy commercial traffic and bad visibility all together scare most tyros witless. They then promptly enrol for voluntary training.

Those few who weren't scared don't survive . . .

No need for compulsory licencing . . .

Ok, I see now you're trying to make out of this a " let's see who has it longer, right?

Don't bother, I don't care. My only concern is that there are people with such short view that make a general rule ( danger in Spanish waters) out of a concrete incident where twenty cheaters were caught.
