Hello together,
I had a delay when engaging the gear at one engine. So we checked the actuator (was OK) and the shift cable (was OK). Nevertheless we change the Cables to Xact Cables. So we think it is the cone, causing this problem. While the boat is on land for winterization we removed the legs and found this second problem:

I bought the boat from new and did every maintenance you can imagine (and much more) with an authorized VP dealer. Engines are D4 300 from 2012, with 550 hours on the clock.
Does anyone know if this a known problem on the dph or what can cause such an issue? Normal abrasion?

Hard to say without a detailed history of what’s been molested by whom .
Jerky rapid gear changing from Fwds to stern often , possibly if the revs have not settled down .If it’s got a Rev limiter thingy built into the ECU ( guessing it has ) then its values may be out permitting slightly higher than optimal rpm changes ? Just working it out from the pic . The “ clunk “ often heard ??

Or simply incorrect oil used despite what was written and paid for on the invoice .
Or ( again history ? ) it’s been running with the correct oil , taking back the insinuation of poor service by your tech(s) —— but milky from day 1 last time the oil was done - until the next change up to 12/12 ?
Or it’s been removed and incorrect shims put back in a rebuild ?
Or it’s shaft / bearings has excessive play ......so the teeth clash more .

You will never know and it does not change the outcome .

We had the same on one of the dph drives on our windy 37 with d4 260 engines. No idea what caused it, had the drive rebuilt and its been fine

Looks like the case hardening has disappeared from the gear , not great at the hours but sadly I’ve seen catastrophic failures at far less hours

Thanks for the replies.
@: The oil was never milky, we used the correct oil and I treated the gear shifter very, very gently...
So the problem should be solved next boating season... and i hope we will all have a very nice Year 2021 on the water!
