SWMBO wants an oven, probably to warm her pain au chocolat at breakfast time. Of course, if you have one, you get more interesting cooking options and I'd exercise the options. We don't have gas, but one of those nice Origo twin burners. With children on board a stove top Coleman oven seems unwise.

Origo oven is megabucks for what seems, in essence, to be a stainless steel box with a single? Origo burner at the bottom and a glass door at the front. It occurred to me that buying a moribund old caravan oven, removing all the gas bits and fitting a single spirit burner (Origo 1500?) in the base might solve the problem of SWMBOs wants without breaking the bank or getting really lucky off Ebay.

Any thoughts, or has the effect of working in the Portsmouth Municipal Home For The Bewildered finally rubbed off. The required skill set seems to be little more than basic tinbashing.

Don't laugh but have you considered a microwave oven?

A friend bought a nice expensive gas oven and doesn't like it. He's seriously looking at replacing it with a microwave as what little cooking is done, is carried out when in port and in a marina.

They're only used for short periods so not sure if a big inverter might run one off the batteries - I am sure other forum members with the electrical knowledge should be able to put light on the feasibility of this.

Co-incidence about Microwave ...

My wife loves the idea that we have the standard Calor Gas Oven, Grill and 2 place hob.
But in reality we only really use the grill and hob. The ovenb stays as a pan store mostly !

I suggested to her that we could change it to a more modern version of grill and hob ... still gas - with Microwave under. So we retain independent cooking - and gain MW when connected to shore. She agreed.

In fact if you don't need independent cooking and are usually connected to shore - Batchelor "Stoves" .... the table top electric hob on top of oven box's could be an answer ?

You can get combination microwave ovens that cook really well. We have a panasonic one that works as normal oven and grill.

Andrew you have clearly understood that 'heating the pain /chocolat' is the symptom not the cause of your requirements. If it were I would suggest that the coleman is the perfect solution to the specific problem ie it's size (perfect for those poc's), storage and match to your existing heat source.

Just get on a do the job properly or restrict your cruising to the availaibility of fresh bread etc and resign yourself to an early morning wwalk everyay!

Homa there is at least one 12 volt microwave oven on the market albeit at about twice the price of standard M/W. The advantage is less current (still a heck of a lot) because the 12 volts is converted directly to 1000 volts for the magnetron. If you use an inverter you convert 12volts to 380volts DC which is switched to make 250v Ac which goes into M/W to be transformed to 1000vac then rectified to 1000vDC. So you lose efficiency with each conversion so the 12v M/W is far more efficient. (Drawing in the order of 80 amps.)

Now as for Andrew's question. I( would be considering a box sitting on top of the existing burners. It can be insulated and clamped down very firmly. Yes it would be a pain to remove and refit from the burners but then you may find you don't actually use it often. If you do then go for a built in one.

good luckwith SWMOB olewill

might work, you're right that the origo oven is a box with a burner, but I'm not sure of the exact arrangement. It is certainly only one spirit burner. If it would help, I can take some photos of our Origo oven (there's me gloating again - did I tell you I got it cheap on boatsandoutboards /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif) when we're on the boat this weekend.

Grr:-)

Yes please.

If you buy a peltier effect fridge, you can also use it to heat stuff. As the season comes to an end you will find them on sale in daft places like Maplin for about £25, and you can use them on boat for heating or cooling.
Next month I will be publishing a delicious receipe for Seagull soup, based on the heating effect of the said fridge
