Hi looking for any advice possible, I have a Volvo Penta d4 evc c 2009. When I switch on my batteries I should here the gear actuator pulse it doesn’t then when I try and start the panel lights up but no crank ,fault (check evc) go in to Oem mode and I get
mid 164 Sid 253 FMI 9 . Now here is the funny bit (not laughing) if I go in , turn on battery’s wait approximately 3 minutes you here the usual actuator sound happening and all is good boat starts and no fault
Things tried to date, replaced actuator, checked plugs on pcu and hcu recalibrated lever,it seems to take 3 minutes for the
Pcu to receive a signal from hcu
Any ideas?

I'd double check the cable connections for a bad joint.
Then try swapping things to see if the problem moves sides.

Thanks for reply Not down to boat until weekend and will double check all cable connections, single engine setup so swapping over not an option

The code photos given are for an ‘SHCU’ which was the abbreviation for a ‘Steering’ HCU, ie those found on early IPS boats. Volvo later dropped the ‘S’ and all HCU’s are now referred to just as HCU’s.

So, that workshop manual explanation is not strictly relevant for this example; I’ll try to add screenshots of the one that is...

So, this could be an issue that’s resolved by doing an auto-configuration (different to a lever calibration) or a re-programme of the HCU; if the latter has never been done then checking for and carrying out any software updates would be worthwhile to rule out a software gremlin

Hi thanks I can do a auto configuration this weekend and see if it will help, the problem is when it does get the settings it will go ok until you switch batteries off and leave for some time

Hello. I have the same problem, how did you finally resolve it? I have a 2008 Volvo D4. I also get the number 56 on the tilt/trim gauge along with the same code you had. Sometimes I turn the battery switch off and on several time and I heard what I believe to be the actuator buzz, then the codes go away and the engine will start. I have the boat in a shop and they have been trying to identify the problem without much luck so far. Thanks

You have great knowledge on these fault codes. Can you help me. I have 2 on my D4-260's MID 187 PSID 231 FMI 2 and MID 164 PSID 94 FMI 12. Many thanks

Both codes suggest an ‘incompatible chassis ID’ but you’d need Vodia to see what’s communicating on your system and what chassis ID numbers each unit thinks it’s got, as they should all match

SHCU stands for Standalone Helm Control Unit, this unit has no control lever, just only have programmed circuit board, which normally we can see the boat using the 3rd party mechanical control lever or mechanical gear shifting

possible causes come from: interrupted CAN bus by poor contact or cables loosening. Please check PCU -HCU cables plugs connectors, and clean it up with cleaner liquid. Next, try to Auto configuration the EVC system, re- calibration control lever again.
If the problem still comes back, then call the nearby service dealer to re-program the HCU
The worst is the EEPROM of HCU may be faulty, it randomly lost configuration data from all nodes in the system. HCU then should be replaced

Hi Araby. I wonder how you resolved your problem with fault MID164 SID253 FMI9 and trim indicating 56. I have the same problem showing and the engine won't start. Sometimes I get it cleared and starting is OK, but then without touching anything the next day it can all return. I am currently working through connections but any advise shared would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Paldri
Did you ever get this resolved? I have the exact same issue on a twin D6-330. PT engine showing 56 on trim indicator and the same error you had. tried swopping cabled (Data link cable) but same issue with the same datalink cable from the other engine...

Any help is very much appreciated.

G'Day BR. Looks like issue finally resolved with a new PCU in the engine. Not the cheapest of fixes but fingers crossed so far.

Hey Paldri
Tracing a similar fault in our boat. so randomly your actuator will not move when you turn on the main switch? You get HCU <-> PCU comm error? you see 56 in trim display?
Were you able to do things to start anyways or would it always say that it cannot start because engine is in gear?
It required a Vodia tool to reprogram the serial number of the new PCU right?
May I ask how much you had to pay for the PCU (new or used)?
Thanks for sharing - I also keep fingers crossed that this will fix your issue :-)

Re calibrate the trim , the system thinks the drive is too high so it won’t allow engine start . It could be the trim sensor or wet dirty plug .

Hey VovloPaul
Thanks for the advice - will give it a try, but it seems the 56 on trim has a different reason - please see this post: Volvo Penta D6 EVC-C issue
That post give the full story on what happens. so the 56 seems to be a result of HCU and PCU not communicating...
Let me know if you have any thoughts :-)
