D4 225 engine, any good? What to look out for?

What year? We had issues with our 2008 D4s which lead to a rebuild. Rumor is that the older models may have had metallurgy issues, leading to cracked pistons, blocks (per our local Volvo dealer). Therefore, we installed dual pyrometers to monitor EGTs. We also have a 2019 D4 260 which has performed extremely well. Still trying to get used to not having replaceable anodes in the newer D4!

We have two D4-260's.
They are great engines in general, but the cooling systems can become salted up, requiring intercoolers / heat exchangers to be disassembled and cleaned, which is not cheap.
The upsides are the electronic controls. smoother running and a lack of smoke compared to older engines.

The recommendation is to strip and clean the raw water coolers every five years I believe. Pain of a job apparently, will find out next winter!
The early engines don't have an anode on the alloy pipe taking the exhaust and raw water away, check every year for corrosion. This and the steering cylinder farce makes me think, like Gus suggested, Volvo don't really understand metallurgy.
