I’m thinking of going for two days/one night. I’ve never been and would be interested to hear any views about convenient hotels. Budget is not €€€€ but not rock bottom. Is it best to do one of the show packages, maybe?
Thank you

We’ve have stayed at the Holiday Inn Express Am Wehrhahn, it’s a two minute walk from the Sbahn from the airport and a couple of minutes walk to the city centre. Would certainly use it again.

I stayed three years ago in the Altstadt: more interesting in the evenings. Found a cheap hotel - 'Altstadt Hotel St. Georg' - a cycle ride along the bank of the Rhine. (I was on crutches at the time, flew a folding bike in the aircraft hold and bungeed my crutches on the back of the bike; not a great solution for a show that's several times the size of the estate to walk around...)

But really, Google Maps to the area, search for 'hotel', select your price bracket and you'll find your options.

I've stayed there a few times for the boat show in various "unmemorable" hotels.

The good thing is the public transport to and from the exhibition halls is free, provided that you have your show pass and passport/photo ID with you. I use booking.com to find a good value hotel which is close to either a U-bahn or S-bahn stop and not necessarily close to the show.

Its a great show and well worth the journey.

Ok you have left it very late to get a place in reasonable hotels. However places like the Hilton have handed over rooms to BA for example, so I suggest you try booking a flight and hotel package with BA for example. trying to get a room separately can work out much more expensive or you can be told that all the rooms have gone when that might not be the case.

I went this year and have booked to go again in 2019. Loads of availability still on flights, assuming going there from London, but less so for hotels. So, I would focus on finding (and booking) a hotel first, before booking the flight. Both times I've booked flights and accommodation separately.

I tried to book the same hotel I stayed in back in January, about 5 mins round the corner from the Hauptbahnhof (central station) but it was fully booked on the second Saturday. As a consequence, I've ended up booking somewhere else but which is conveniently closer to the centre of the old town (Altstadt) and just along the street from one of the traditional breweries (on Oststrasse)! :)

You will soon discover that hotel prices during the period of the boat show are (at least) twice the normal January rate.

The boat show is a great experience. It is huge. And there is good fun to be had in the centre of the old town too. Enjoy!!

I've only once been to Dusseldorf during Boot - business trip and I didn't find any spare time to go - but I don't remember it being more expensive than normal. I doubt that conference centre isn't standing empty for the rest of the year.

Easy to find hotels there on the web - few years since I've been so I won't give any recommendations in case they're out of date. Airport is pretty close to the city so a taxi from the airport is cheaper than you'd assume. I've caught the train in from the Airport too but the main station is quite a walk away from the Altstadt. Easy walk from the Altstadt to the exhibition.

An evening out in the Altstadt also recommended - the locals are very proud of the local beer (das Alt) so best drink it to avoid offending them. :)

One of the airports is close to the city. One is 60 mins away at an ex-RAF base in the middle of nowhere.

But I'm sure Ryan Air will sell you a ticket for a shuttle bus.

Only been there once. Ryanair was delayed, but the bus wasn't. It left empty. 3 hours later another plane arrived to find their bus full from the previous flight.

Going this year, but meeting people in Köln before hand.

Ah, but remember that this is a boat show, so we're all loaded. Right? :)
