Cutting a hole

Mark out:
Pin and string
Print a circle and trace
Big dividers...

Drill a 10mm (or what ever you need to clear the jigsaw bit)hole near to but inside your circle.
Jigsaw spirally out to the hole
If you cannot get the finish you want then nibble away with the jigsaw till you are close as you feel comfortable.

Finish with half round rasp.

I need to cut a 20cm diameter hole in a piece of 10mm ply. Any suggestions on how bet to do this? Jigsaw? If so how?

Easy with a jig saw !

But cut with the front side down so that any splintering of the top layer of the ply is on the back and make sure the work is well clamped down. I'd clamp it across a couple of saw horses

Or get a reverse cutting blade? I use them regularly and they are very good for keeping a clean edge on the 'top' side.

If you want a clean edge on both sides then you need a jig and a router. Or a suitable former and a pattern cutting router bit.

If you ever need a presice / precision job you can always use a router with a guide bush and a template takes longer but if it needs a precise hole this should give good results.

The only problem with that is that you first have to cut a precision hole to be able to use the guide bush or a cutter with bearing.

By the time you have spent posting here you couuld have hand cut it with a padsaw !

You can do a hole with a jigsaw by mounting it on beam and then just spinning it - but 20cm is a little small for that really - and not worth the fuss to set up.
A router trimmer would eat it and be quick - but you still need some sort of circle cutting fitting.- but it would be vey sweet and clean.
You can be very accurate with a jigsaw - at that thickness. New blade fine cut.
Practice first !
