Hi

On my list of things to do this winter (down here) is to check the cutlass bearing. I've got the boat out of the water and the bearing seems tight, there being no sideways/up-down movement in the shaft. The bearing has not been changed for several years as far as I know.

Should a cutlass bearing be changed as a matter of course (I understand it is not easy)? or should one wait for symptoms in the form of excessive movement?

Regards

If it aint broke, dont repair it!! If theres no movement in the cutlass, leave it alone, they can last for many years, as long as they are lubricated by water flow. it's not an easy job and they are also not cheap. Depnds what type you have.
