Cutlass bearing replacement

I need to replace the cutlass bearing fitted in a P bracket on my Jeanneau 40. However, I'm getting conflicting advice. Jeanneau say the bearing can be drifted out without removing the prop-shaft. Other boat owners tell me the shaft has to come out, that looks like the rudder has to come off! Any practical advice would be greatly appreciated.
