Customs & Excise Raid Newtown Creek!

Re: Constitutional failure

I wouldn't mind the infringement of my human rights so much if they were succeeding in their task, but they clearly fail all the way down the line and just get more and more draconian with each passing failure.

I've enjoyed a 6.00 a.m. armed boat search without an apology or a by-your-leave and it leaves a very nasty taste in the mouth. They don't at all seem to appreciate that just because they "can" do it doesn't mean they "should" do it. Not so many years ago, with exactly the same powers, a nice man in a suit and some gold braid would ask if he could come aboard. One knew one couldn't stop him, but politeness does nobody any harm and oils the wheels, they've completely forgotten about this now.

Harmonising with Europe the laws they are supposed to be enforcing would be a very good start.

The problem with Customs and to a lesser extent the Police is that they cannot do their jobs without the support of the public. If both these services continue to piss off the largely law abiding majority with tricksy behaviour and with enthusiastic fines and punishments for minor errors of judgment, and continue to operate with a generally unnecessary heavy handed attitude so that they are seen as the problem rather than the solution, the whole basis of the thing will break down.

Personally, after the way I was treated the Customs they can go jump. I'm not a smuggler now any more than I was then, but why should I help people who treat me with so much rudeness and indifference?

Catching the odd drug smuggler is all they do do, isn't this the problem? I don't use drugs but I figure if ever I wanted some I'd only have to corner some kid from the local High School and say, "Where can I buy some pot from Mate"? If he doesn't know he will certainly know a kid that does, so none of us are more than two people from a supplier.

Does this mean they catch 1% or 10%? I don't know, but I think I do know it's not working and will not work and the whole things needs looking at afresh.
