I've just received an email from Curtis saying that Howden t/a Haven Knox-Johnston had acquired them. I hope this doesn't go the way of the Y Yacht acquisition by Top Sail that pushed up lots of our premiums!

Fewer insurance brokers can't be good.

My present insurance is with HKJ via Topsail.
I have paid less with Topsail compared to previous years with 'Y'.

Just received the same email. I too hope it doesn't change Curtis, any takeover usually means changing the process for the worse. Early days, will see when it comes to renewal later this year.

Yes just received as well. I hope they can continue to offer the service they did. Let’s keep an eye out on new renewals. I don’t renew until October next year so interested if people could update as they renew post February.

Had the mail too.

I hope things don't change as I found them to be very customer focused, I moved to them after Y were taken over and things changed for the worse and this has the same feel - I hope I am wrong.

Echo MartynG thoughts that one fewer brokers to add to competition is not good news.

Received my insurance renewal from Curtis/HJK, they are offering a "Geo Underwriting Services Ltd t/as Marine & Leisure @ Geo Sp" policy which I have not heard of before, does anyone know GEO and are they any good? My current policy is with Navigators & General and asked for a quote, however Curtis/HJK said it is no longer available.

Thats absolute rubbish - of course Navigators and General are available. The things people say to sell their products!! - Disgraceful.
I was with Curtis last year and had similar poor situation.
Curtis/HJK offered me a continued HJK policy.
I contacted Gallagher Insurance Brokers (amongst others) who said that HJK couldn't cover me - something to do with not the right type of boat.
See the trend here - lying to get the business through Curtis.
OTOH, Gallaghers were very good, offering different policies - I chose Navigators and General (see, they are still available).
My premium was less than last year.

So, I suggest that you give Jonathan Purvis at Gallaghers a call.
I have spoken to him and he is happy for people on this forum to contact him direct.
In fact, I found them from fellow forumites on this forum.
His phone number is - +44 7458 124864
and email jonathan_purvis@ajg.com

Just say that you have been referred by friends on the YBW forum.
I'm sure you will get on well with him.

Thank you hurricane, this is very helpful and I appreciate the heads-up, I see Gallaghers is also mentioned in another insurance thread too.

Hi Hurricane, FYI and anyone else reading this, I phoned Jonathan today and he explained Gallagher are not accepting lower value insurance at the moment (for the period May, June & July), I guess they are too busy with the higher valued boats. However, he was helpful in suggesting two other insurers as he felt I would get a good deal and policy.

Also, if anyone else is considering a GEO policy, take a closer look at the exclusions, one being "If Your Craft , tender or toys are fitted with Lithium- ion batteries they must be charged within daylight hours , must not be left unattended whilst being charged and they must be used in accordance with the manufacturers’ recommendations/instructions." A policy I would avoid just on this, not seen it before.
