Hi,
Odd request I know…. But I’m trying to help a GB athlete taking part in the Norseman Ironman on 6th August; who will be departing at 5am to swim from Erd to eidfjord at the top of Eidfjorden

she wants to know if when setting off east will the tide be with or against her ?

From my experience of sailing the fjords and timetables I can see for the current week at least, the tidal rise and fall is minimal …. Around 70cm but any current is significant when your swimming !!

Does anybody have the tide tables for the 6th August for Eidfjord so I can figure out if it is at least ebbing or flowing … or view on strength etc.

Any help appreciated; I think it’s more a mental thing for her to understand whether she will need to pace herself against a current.

Many thanks !

But doesn't Ironman have a suit of armour equipped with things like jets?
That’s the delux version, your basic Ironman/women kit is a bit more skimpy….. having skinny dipped in a Norwegian fjord in August before I would question why anybody would want to swim five miles at 5am in the morning…. But that what my friend does and she asked me the question.

I assume with the name Antarctic Pilot you must have the answer ??

Apologies, I’ve just checked where the Antarctic is and it’s that other lump of shrinking ice :-(

Any help still appreciated ?
Sorry - I'm afraid I can't give a serious answer! But I'm afraid it's entirely possible that no-one can; the place you're looking at is a long and tortuous passage from the sea. You can be pretty certain that any tidal current will be small by any navigational standard, and close in to shore it will be even less. This (Eidfjord Tide Times | 7 Day Tide Chart | TideTime.org) may help, but they only seem to give 7-day predictions. You can project that forward without too much difficulty - the time of high and low water will advance at a constant interval of about 6.5 hours a week (the table linked to will allow you to get a closer approximation), so you can project those times forward to get pretty close to the times of high and low water. You can also be pretty sure that, given the configuration of the fjord, any tidal current will be parallel to the axis of the fjord, with flow in favour of your friend on the flood and against her on the ebb. But given the tiny tidal range, the current is going to be very small.

Try telephoning the locals. There will be a fisherman, harbourmaster, ferryman who can answer you qestion exactly without have to draw breath because he has been pottering on that fjord all his life.
