I found a nasty little "bilge" underneath the heads which has no means of draining. It's not very big and is not empty, but there is still a pong from it and it will also no doubt get water/liquids into it from time to time, what's the best product to treat it with to stop the smell though?

If it's fairly accessible can you shape a slightly convex-upwards plastic lid and epoxy it or Evostick it in place? Maybe a lid off a plastic food box would do.

If its hard to get to and drain use a "Pella" type vacuum sucker .. comes with a very small bore suction pipe - best kit ever.
I use pet odour liquid ( buy in any pet shop) in a sprayer to get rid of any nasty niffs , just spray every so often to kill the smell - works for me .

Dilute bleach was what I was thinking of too. Certainly best place to start. The bilge "access panel" has the heads bolted through it and is screwed into place. So it's only now that I am installing a new heads that I have discovered the compartment.

Thanks for the replies lads! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Dilute bleach will clean it out but it wont do anything very much to prevent the smells returning.

Possible to make some provision for the space to drain?

Don't allow male crew members to pee standing up. That should stop traces of one certain "liquid" finding its way in there.

Get a pack of the cheapest supermarket own-brand disposable nappies to keep on board. Put one with the absorbant side down in the lowest part of the bilge and check it regularly. Any sign of absorbed liquid chuck it and replace it - £2 worth of nappies should last more than season and keep the bilge bone-dry.

Yes Dettol would be a good choice. It will remain active unlike bleach.

But only in monohulls it seems . The bottle says "Not recommended for use around cats"
