cummins qsb 5.9 engines

The base block prior to the QSB was the 6B*5.9 (5.9 litre) and was used by millions of buses, Dodge trucks, etc. Any engine made in such volume must have had something designed about right.

Also well supported in the UK, and plenty of literature available.

One of my favourite engines, have done many trouble free miles with them and had confidence all the way. A lot quieter than a D6.

Generally regarded as good workhorses.

N.B. They use a proprietary fuel injection system which can be hard to get serviced off the beaten track.

Incorrect, QSB uses Bosch CP3 pump and CRIN 1 injectors (same as D6) probably the most widely used and supportable system out there, also sensors are Bosch sourced in fact the rail pressure sensor has commonality across a huge range of engines same part# used by Cummins, IVECO, MAN, I know for sure possibly Volvo as well. The difference, prices range between £200/£350 from the engine manufacturer however genuine Bosch £90.

Saw IVECO ambulance in Aleppo on the news, uses exactly the same Bosch system comonents............

no nothing to report, just musing, had the T50 for 5 season now and I am thinking in a another year or two I will swap her in for something smaller. Which may take a while, as market for 10 year old 50 footers is probably small. Although I have had volvo engines in 4 of my previous boats, I have to admit I am not blown away by some of the design elements they use. Brackets bolted on brackets, every bolt is a different size, use of high pressure hoses as oil feeds etc. I was very impressed at the design of the QSB engines at last years boat show and heard a lot of good reports about them, and they are made by the zillion so should be a good solid lump.

so I can either just sell up then look for another boat or see if I can find a part exchange, but with the possibility of QSBs instead of volvos. However the only 40 foot flybridge I have seen with QSBs in is a jeanneau prestige 40. Any other suggestions?
