Cummins Mercruiser 4.2l 320hp

Anyone got any observations on/experience of these?
Year 2008, hours 145.
Anything particular to look for?

Basically the same as I have got.
I have been very pleased with them.

4.2L D300 2004

Smoke free on start up

no black soot on the stern

quiet

appear to be more economical than similar engines of the same era.

There were issues with isolated engines (I think you can say that for most light weight modern engines).

I believe if you check you will find they have a 6 years manufacturers warranty on major parts .

I have had exception reliability over the last 6-7 seasons.

I did have one issue , thankfully at the end of a season anyway that Cummins resolved under warranty.

There are no tappets to adjust making them a very easy engine to service.

Check for corrosion around the fan belts which may indicate a leaking raw water pump, not difficult to service the pump with new seals but any rust from the viscous damper needs to be removed as the viscous damper needs to be perfectly balanced.

Cummins no longer sell these engines but Nanni do so parts shouldnt be an issue.

VM specialist appears to be able to source all parts at reasonable cost.

The Volvo Penta die hards will tell you that the residual values are not as high.

I believe that used to be partially true however with secondhand Volvo D4 engines and Volvo outdrives becoming less popular the gap is closing rapidly.

Thanks for that.
I had noted that they have hydraulic tappets and, being common rail, I hoped they might be a bit more economical (or should that be less thirsty?).

I haven't seen the receipts yet, but these are reported to have been, if anything, over-serviced.

Try to attach the performance curves for CR and VP37 pump.

Trying to save fuel. Look at the boat not the engine!

I already had the CR curves, but not the VP ones. Interesting comparisons between them in the mid-ranges. In real use, it appears that the CR ones could be heavier on fuel.

As you indicate, the only way to really find out is on the boat itself, which is not possible in a sea trial. This is a relatively heavy boat and the shaft drive versions appear to be thirsty. This one has Bravo 3 outdrives and enough power to be considerably better than the common sluggish KAD42/43 versions.

However, that is not the most important factor in deciding whether to purchase. The engines are unfamiliar to me and Daka's input is useful.

I sent this to another forum member, so I thought I might as well put it on here.

The boat is with Approved Boats at Hamble Point and is a real beauty. The present owner is said to be a first-time boater. The last two owners have spent a small fortune on it, including the re-engining. The instrumentation is the best I have seen on a boat like this. The only things missing are aircon and a passerelle.

However, on Wednesday I got as far as agreeing a price and putting a deposit down and then yesterday I chickened out.

I would dearly love to get back on the water after a gap of six years (not counting a 750 mile Med delivery trip a couple of years ago). However, I have underlying medical conditions, (well controlled and I am relatively fit) which make SWMBO very nervous and after a very sleepless night, we decided not to go with it.

I think I shall regret not buying it and I suspect that is the end of my boating aspirations, but I can't complain. I just desperately wanted another go while I still can. C'est la vie!

This is the boat - 122 pictures!

David O'Rourke at Approved Boats was very helpful and gets full marks for customer relations. He was responsive and attentive throughout without being pushy. When I decided to pull out, he was very understanding. Definitely recommended.
