crusader sails

i bought a new sail and stacking system at the boat show this year and it all fits fine .my problem is as the stacking system fits under the boom there is no provision for fitting my kicking strap! Well i thought i no what to do make a small incision and poke it through .Big mistake the small hole is growing now .the only advantage with the hole now is that the sail bag that used to fill with spray and then run out mostly over me now runs out of the hole My question is does anyone else have this system and what did they do? have emailed Crusader sails but they dont reply taa jeffro

Good luck getting a reply. There sails etc are ok but if you have a problem dont expect any feed back as to how it will be fixed or when it will be sorted etc.

I have never seen a stakpack type cover that fits under the boom, is this correct? Normally there is a sailcloth bottom to the cover that fits around the sail foot bolt rope and slides with it into the top groove of the boom (or I think has it's own boltrope if your mainsail is loose footed).

As Robin says, most systems fit around the boltrope and slide into the boom slot with the sail. Have you fitted yours correctly? If it is this slide in type, the central part of the cover should be a strip of sailcloth as this resists abrasion better than acrylic(at least that is how it is on mine).
Failing that, you'll have to have the hole sewn up with a binding tape to prevent further fraying and getting even bigger!

If you have access to a sewing machine it will be quite easy and cheap to fix. A normal domestic one will be able to do it.

A strong way of repairing this would be to sew on a square of ordinary fabric tape, the kind that is used to make sail ties. You can get this from chandlers, sail makers or climbing shops.

If your sewing machine has zigzag, set zigzag size to maximum and stitch length to very small. This gives a bead of stitches known as bar tack, and is very strong. Once you have sewn on your square of tape, you can then cut out the underlying fabric up to the inside edges of the tape.

Here's a pic of some tape and bar tack repairs I did to my sail cover.

The diagonal tape is bar tacked, the others are plain zig-zag.

Another source of this tape (free) if you are a skinflint like me is to cut up old life jackets you sometimes find in marina skips.
