Cruising to Almerimar

Left Gib last week and have slowly wended our way along the Costa del Sol and have artived here in Almerimar. I must say I am pleasanly surprised! But most of all the price is very right for a night! Paid €39 in Duquesa but they had me over there, charged for 15mtrs! Here it is just €21 a night inc tva, elec and water! Very impressed. Am now going to look for a beer! Will report back.

Ankara? Miserable expats sat is a miserable bar being served expensive beer with no tapas.... what's not to love! Almerimar is not great, but there are many better places than Ankara there. The Chinese is good though!

We liked it, initial reaction was it's a concrete jungle but it had a very real community feel about it.

In short doses it (Ankara) is ok, especially for breakfast with Beer .... But agree that there are many other places

I only get there once a year but have done so for the last 10 years since My Boat was moored almost exactly where yours was last November ( If your boat was the one that a strange Irish man handed over some Grants whiskey, and odds and ends which he was not able to consume)

The excellent chandlers Alamar Centro Nautico are all brits despite the name and learned more about radar and chart plotters in a couple of hours from the boss Spencer than I did with days trolling the www.

Quite apart from price and the best English speaking boat facilities after Palma de Majorca it has so much to offer as well as a beach, hairdressers, 2 or 3 chemists, banks and a huge supermarket there is a Irish tapas bar restaurant called MacGowans .. who cleverly do UK tapas (all the other bars offer Espagne tapas) You can have fish and chips, egg and chips, curry (brilliant) and about 15 others with specials. The deal is you get a free tapas with every drink you buy. We normally end up not having tapas with our last round as we are already full... Such nice people.

Got the hang of the tapas thing, went back, grande cervesa para mi, vino blanco seco para swmbo, fish and chip for her as tapas, calamari and chips para mi.
What we actually got was a small fillet of white fish, freshly cooked with a few chips, a slice of bread and some garlic mayo. I got 3 fresh battered calamari rings, some chips, a slice of bread and some garlic mayo. Spot on! So not expensive when you get the hang of it.

Just read your account of your cruise. Benalmedina, never again! Hardly any wind but they put us on the north quay to where you were. We rocked and rolled for two nights out of three! It was horrible! We couldnt figure out where it was coming from, hardly any wind yet we rolled from side to side about 30 deg, there was a South African guy next to us, he was physically sea sick! Never again, spread the word, horrible moorings, pity, the place itself is nice enough!

We are considering moving South from Valencia. Looking for a good base for a year for our ( now) group owned yacht. flights, decent sailing area, supermarket, hire car parking, restaurants, interesting 'hinterland' , price, repairs, all on the wish list. Would you recommend Almerimar then?
 
We not been there for some years but I heard it's not changed much . Supermarket,car parking,restaurant,repairs and prices are good .
Down side , power is paid by hiring their lead at 3 euros a day , bit expensive or so it was ,
flights are from Malaga an bit of a drive , the Marina is well away from any town but if you had an hire car that not really going to matter .
Which leave cruising ground , that where Almarimar lets the side down , it's west or East along the Spanish coats , not a lot to see except plastic green houses unless you cross over the North Africa .
Great winter stop over , but not a place I would base a boat .

I liked it, as does Paw Paw by the looks of it, the electric and water was in the price. Cruising good to the east with the beginning of crystal clear water and good anchoring according to my mate who went further east. We turned back becuase I cooked my batteries. A bit of a hike to Almeria for the airport. La Linea where we are now, been here since last August and paid till next May is very good, safe as can be. Gib airport, 15 mins walk away.
