Anyone done the cruising instructor course?
What did you think of it, easy, difficult???
Who did you do it with?
What parts of it were challenging
How much was related to improving your training skills and awareness of the sylabus, how much was assessing your skills and ability??

Any feedback would be appreiated

There isn't a cruising instructor course. "Cruising Instructor" is a rating given by the Principal of a Sailing School to a Yachtmaster with whom he has sailed, to say that in his opinion the YM is able to run Competent Crew or Day Skipper courses; the rating then has to be approved by the RYA. Some schools may run courses, but they are not official RYA courses, and there is no standard format or syllabus.

Hi Slipknot

Yes, I was assessed as a cruising instructor. I did it with Southern Sailing. An excellent 5 days - really good fun. Aside from the obvious concern they might have at first - that you don't know what you're doing, they assume that as a YM(comm) you do and concentrate more on your skills as a skipper - people skills, communication etc.

In some ways it was very similar to YM.

I now use the qualification to teach.

If I can be of further assistance, then PM me.

Correct

It's more of an assessment but there is some teaching going on as well.

So does that mean you're a crap YM teacher? Cos I was under the impression that Coastal Skippers with commercial endorsement were allowed to teach and award competent crew and dayskippers?

The rules changed, this is from the RYA Instuctors courses leaflet.

Valid for Instructors teaching Competent Crew/Helmsmans and Day skipper practical courses. This qualification will be mandatory for instructor teaching at RYA sea schools from February 1st 2002.

Eligibility

Validity

The qualification is valid for five years. After 5 years the RYA Cruising Instructor must either be re-tested, or preferably take a Yachtmaster Instructor Qualifying Course.

If the candidate is a member of the RYA, the issue of the Instructor qualification is free. Alternatively there is a charge to non-members of £33 for the endorsement, a cheque for which, (payable to RYA), should be collected from the candidate and sent to RYA HQ with the record card and Yachtmaster certificate.

Assessment

The assessment must be carried out by the nominated Principal or Chief Instructor of an RYA recognised sea school. The assessment should last eight hours for one candidate or twelve for two.

No more than two candidates may be examined in one day. I hope not!

As far as I'm aware, in order to teach practical sailing to Day Skipper/Comp Crew level you need to be qualified to YM(comm) and assessed as mentioned above.

There's no defined age limit once you're qualified, provided that you can pass the medical and still do the job. I've just got mine renewed at 72.
