Am planning a trip up the North East coast of the UK from our base in Hull Marina. It is a new area for us. We would appreciate any observations from those of you that have cruised the North East coast from Hull to Newcastle uopn Tyne. Thanks. Sea Mist

Welcome to the forum seamist :)

Filling out your profile may encourage extra replies with your boat type for example.

By fluke the last time I went up that way I was with a boat called seamist (corniche).

The Binks can also get a bit choppy and need a wide berth.

Cobbles have nets that drift out from the boat and need a mile clearance depending which way the wind is blowing the cobble as the net acts as a sea anchor.
You can contact the cobbles as they have vhf and they are happy to direct you round the right side.
They operate on ch6 and 8 mostly but it varies as each community has their own working frequency .

Local dialect is an issue the further north you go , a boot is a boat for example but if you watch X factor you will be fine otherwise you might want to get Alvedansen Pet on DVD.

The Birds are the best bit of the trip :)

At the state of tide you are likely to arrive at Spurn, you can exit the Humber on the North bank passing between Spurn Point and the TSS (check depth). Then run paralell to the TSS to avoid The Binks before turning North. If it's flat calm (unlikely) you can cut across some of the Outer Binks (depth again) but usually it's lumpy! This saves quite a bit of time over the "prescribed route" which takes you out on the South bank before turning North and crossing the Precautionary Zone. I always use this (north) route when leaving/entering the Humber from/to the North.

Then it's a matter of pushing the tide (pretty unavoidable given the lock times at Hull) and dodging the lobster pots!

Flamborough head can be lumpy and dependant upon wind speed/direction can be better if you go wide further out to sea.

Any Northerly wind can make a mess as it has such a long reach (no land in the way from the North pole! But don't be put off, just read the forecast in relation to your vessel and experience. I tend not to go if the inshore forecast is above a 4. No that it's necessarily dangerous, it just stops being fun and can lead to crew mutiny!

Have fun, safe journey.

Hull to Whitby.
Fairly easy bit of coast. Did it last w/e & w/e before. If slow displacement, leave Hull on the top of the tide so favourable as far as Flamborough Head. Suggest keep north of Sunk Channel , tight in to Spurn Head & to north of 3a buoy to avoid Traffic Scheme. Head out to 13' meridian before turning to the north to avoid turbulance on the Binks Bank. How close in to Flamborough Head depends on wind against or wind with tide. Arrive at WY (ch 11) between 2 hrs before to 2hrs after HW for bridges at every 1/2 hr for the marina.
With a planing boat, can leave Hull up to 3 hrs after HW.

Bolt holes - Bridlington & Scarborough - 3 hrs either side of HW, but takes the mud at Brid.

Beware of pot markers -dhans, pellets & plastic milk bottles.
Beyond - Hartlepool Marina.... 4hrs either side of HW if 1m draught springs, 5hrs with neaps.
Tyne - Royal Quays - available 24hrs.

Get back to me if you need any further advice.

Paul
