We used to have a chute+turtle on our former boat (Nic35). We had a problem getting the chute into the turtle with the guy still attached. But maybe you do let the guy go completely? We had a setup with a spare ss-wire winch in the cockpit, where we put on a thin kevlar line as a guy. Was handy when adjusting luff tension, but we were always struggling with the chute when it had to come down, as it kept catching wind when lowering. Do you reckon the guy was too short?
We always went into some serious boozing after we had the thing down. Hence my valium remark.
Anyway, it worked fine the way we did it now, and we can stuff the sail into the aft cabin before sorting it out. And a snuffer is on the wish list. But your halyard trick is one I must try next season.
