Hi all, i have posted this on PBO R To R, so apologies if you saw it there too!

Hi all, need some comments from those with cruising chutes.

We have been looking at purchasing a chute for Cento (Legend 36) and have now got the options below.

Has anyone got any info or experience of the following chutes, good or bad?
The prices are for the chute and snuffer (inc vat), nothing else!

Jeckells £1466
Kemps £1180
Momentum £1198
Crusader £856 (massive discount from £1222)

FWIW, I've been looking at a C/C for Guapa too.
To fly the kite, realistically we need a full crew (4). With the eldest off to uni in the near future that's not going to happen a lot (if at all).
So, a C/C would be a better choice. And even then, I don't envisage getting that flying more than a couple of times a year.

Going with Momentum - would go with Dolphin if I could afford it.
Plan to spend the money 'saved' on a new Dolphin main and genoa instead.

Cruising Chutes

We have a Dolphin .. Cruising Chute .. Its absolutley awsome .. Not the cheapest but comes with everything fitted and ready to go .. Choose your own panel colours .. Delivered ontime .. at the price agreed .. They even dropped it down to Half Penny Pier for us .. We got within a couple of foot and they tossed it onboard and gave us a shove off .. All done on the phone .. Very good .. Recommended .. As usual NO CONNECTION .. Just a happy customer ..

Mine is more an Asymmetric than C/C. made by Gowen - Ocean.
it is superb:D.
pls pls dont have a coloured "Triangle", you will regret it.
imho Kemp out of your list.
talk to Gowen or Dolphin;)

Dolphin and Gowan are one and the same, Dolphin bought Gowan a couple of years or so ago.

We were lucky enough to find a pre-owned (but unused) North Sails cruising chute for Mermaid.
We paid £1000 but, together with the snuffer, it originally cost around £3000!
The only downside is it contains a lot of yellow and green, which for someone based in Ipswich, isn't the best colour!!
It would still be nice to find someone who had a photo of us using it as on deck shots are a bit rubbish (Orwell/Stour based folks with cameras please note :D).
Here's a clue of what to look for:

Rather than buying new, I would defintiely recommend a search of some of the used sails sellers sites as some cruising chutes are rarely used sso you may find a bargain. Some of the manufacturers also have some odds and ends of lightly used or new bargains for sale.

BTW, in response to Sailorman's point below, we had our new main and mizzen made by Kemps and they are excellently made, work really well and they gave us a good service.

We have a Crusader Tri Radial, which, as Sailorman alludes to, is more like an asymetric in cut.
It sets well, and we use a spinnaker pole for dead downwind work.
It will fly on a fine reach right up to 60 degrees apparent, but gets overpowered at about 15 knots.

Up to now we have used a snuffer, but next week we take delivery of our Magic Furl furling gennaker gear.

Getting it down is worrying for Lynn, but I don't have a problem with it. Rarely gets wet on dropping.

Snuffer for sale.:D

We have had the normal circular sail bag tied to the rail, but for the last 2 seasons have been using a long Genoa bag from a racing boat which lays it out in 2 lengths, much easier to put away, and the bag folds in half when its stowed in the cabin.

We use 10mm sheets 2x boat length, and a tack line 1.5 x boat length also in 10mm with line led back to Spinlock XTS clutch. Not now required with Magic Furl.

Spinlock XTS clutch for sale. :D

I have had several sails from Paul lees at Crusader, and they are good quality, and they have never failed to deliver on time. They will also haggle, as you have discovered.

Agree about Dolphin - got my chute 18 months ago and the boat show offer then actually made it one of the cheapest I could find. A couple of sail makers seemed quite content to hold their own private conversations at the show and seemed to not recognise why they were there. Dolphin also supplied templates so we could chose colours etc and their snuffer was supplied on the chute all ready to go. Highly recommended
