Cruising blues

Another big "we've given up" spot is Hawaii after loads of Americans set off from the W Coast on their dream Pacific cruise and scare themselves silly on the first big hop to Hawaii - and counting themselves lucky to have made it at all they berth the boat, put it up for sale and jump on the next plane home. Which means if you can get there, there are some bargain blue water cruisers to be had in Hawaii.

I am told that there are a few places where long distance cruisers tend to get stuck and there are consequently lots of well equipped but cheap boats on the market. Port Darwin was one, Falmouth another, anyone add to the list?

North Queensland is a bit like this. Wife fly s off home, husband stays and sells boat.

USA short holidays.

I remember being mystified when watching the Grisham/Cruise movie "The Firm" where they were telling him about all the great fringe benefits of the job house/car/expense acount etc and then ended saying he would have "2 weeks annual holiday" like it was really generous.

cheers

Sure, loads of people dream of cruising off into the sunset and spend years (& not inconsiderable sums of money) planning to make the dream a reality... some of them return to dry land, disappointed & disillusioned because the cruising life turned out not to be what they expected. But how do any of us know whether we are suited to liveaboard life until we have actually tried it.

Better to give it a go & find out one way or the other than reach one's dotage with huge regrets of an unfulfilled dream.

That's my philosophy for what it's worth & will continue with my plans to move aboard in the knowledge & confidence that, if it turns out not to be for me, there will be no shame or lost pride in changing plans.
