Re: Easterly gale in Scillies

The harbour always fills rapidly whenever the wind is in the east, then it is rafting up time at the visitors moorings but there is always the opportunity of anchoring outside the harbour limits anywhere between newfort island and the creeb, in fact between Carn gwaval and the Creeb you are well sheltered by the higher ground, it may take several goes to find a good sandy spot as that area is quite rough a good size fisherman would be ideal, alas you would also suffer wash from passing boat traffic but it is a small price to pay for the shelter.
Another option would be to anchor on the Samson shore opposite Rushy bay on Bryher not so sheltered from the wind but clear of any swell, depends on your plans for going ashore really it is your holiday after all.
It is also possible to anchor at the back (west) of Bryher but this needs careful studying of the chart but that is a good spot to shelter from easterlies and not many other yachts taking that option.
As I said earlier the trick is to be up to date with what the weather is doing and be prepared to move, earlier rather than later.
