Cruise report Kefalonia to Kalamata Aug/Sept 2022

waw what a great post,
very interesting reading, Vas beat me asking when was it, and I'm amazed how little boats there are in that region end of august,
in that period we were on the boat in south sardegna, and while that area is not too crowded over all, still at the end of august much more boats than your area,

in a few years we will probably bring Blue Angel back to south Croatia, and from there, this region is for sure on the destination list,
your 's and hardmy's posts are saved for inspiration :)

may I asc, why do you switch your stabilizers "on" only occasionally ?
ours are "Alway"s on, while cruising or at ancor, ...
so when we cross another boat, or whatever unexpected swell, we are alway's stable :)
Thanks. Yes it is a great cruising area. Re the stabiliser, we have a gyro which is good but requires the generator when either moving or at anchor. The seas around here are seldom bad enough to need stabilization when on the move - I can recall only two occasions over past two years, and at anchor it is often the same and we don’t experience too many issues with passing boats. Hence we tend not to leave on. That saves fuel for generator during the day or in transit and overnight when gen is on for aircon we just never need the stabiliser. The negative is that if something does blow up or if a big ship passes causing a mini tsunami, since the gyro takes about 45 mins to fire up, we do occasionally have Rose spill :). We were in the Balearics and Italy before here and there I think we would be on stabilisers the whole time.

OK, I understand, didn't think about gyro
we have electric fin stabs, and run them on battery power at anker,
our gensets are old, and are a bit smelly, thats why we try to avoid running them on anker for too long

do you experience any effect from the gyro during navigation ?
from others we hear that at displacement speed they have a very small effect, and at planing speed, zero effect.

At displacement we find it pretty good when we have used it but at planing as others suggest tougher to notice any effect. On anchor it is very good. I hear that the fins tend to crab the boat forward which the gyro clearly doesn’t. The main pita with the gyro is the time it takes to power up.

Great report beautiful photos - do you have any experience of the area closer to Corfu and specifically Gouvia Marina?

We do cruise there as well. That area can be defined as Corfu, Paxos and Anti Paxos plus the small islands above Corfu and of course various places on the mainland. A little more crowded and of course in the Summer a destination for many. Gouvia is a good marina but I doubt you could get into it at present. It is part of same group of marinas as where I am and PE owned.

Thanks for the info - am on the case with Gouvia now.

I've heard that before about Gouvia Marina not having any vacancies, but that is complete and utter rubbish, as there's plenty of empty moorings available.
It'll be interesting for Perudo to update us all.
Thanks.
