Crossing to IOW in a tender

Grant , no, honestly i wouldnt even do it in my avon 3,4 sport boat with a 25hp on the back . As others have said as a reliable means of transport across the solent a 5/6 mtr rib is the minimum . it really is not an option .

I'll get my coat.....

To put the finishing touches to this thread, back in the early 70's I was part of a group of lunatics who swam all year round at Southsea and several swam the Solent in the summer, Ryde Sands to Southsea . One of them held the record for several years with a time which was only about twice as long as the car ferry took, though it had further to travel.

I got swept up in it and had a couple of unsuccessful attempts. Got about halfway before the cold got to me. On the first attempt there were two escort boats, a fishing boat for a couple of faster swimmers and a dinghy with outboard and two blokes watching me. When I signalled I'd had enough they picked me up, then tried to start the outboard. No go. I ended up having to row the frigging dinghy back to Southsea seafront while they took the plug out, tried again etc several times. At least I wasn't cold when we got there.

Any time I couldn'y safely cross the Solent in an Avon SR4, you wouldn't choose to be playing in a small yacht.
But the concept doesn't work, that's why IoW moorings are cheaper than the Hamble.
It's a market full of bright people who thought out all the options in about 1960 and every day since.

I laughed out loud at that ???

The most dangerous times, or so they seemed, I've had on a boat in over 30 years have been misshaps in the tender going to the boat when I had a swinging mooring. So glad not to be putt putting across a wind against tide chop when the put putting stops of its own accord.
Agreed. There was a very competent lady sailor who died in Portsmouth Harbour, probably as a result of a mishap with a tender. If the put putting stops mid Solent, you're going to be a long way from base and VERY tired by the time you get ashore. Off Beaulieu in a spring ebb, next stop Poole ?

Well there was a telly “Grand Designs” beach build project on the IOW North shore where the family commuting rib was able to rise up on retractable wheels and drive itself up the beach..
Dry feet at both ends of the trip..

Might tick a couple of boxes for the OP?

But not available in Aldi afaik..
