Crossing the Med from Gandia to Palma - any hints, tips or crew offers!

Will probably not use a marina.

Made the crossing from Sant Carles to Mallorca today.
I did have some strong localised wind near a rain storm today whilst coming round into Palma Bay.
On anchor at the moment in Palm Nova.
Just got back from dinner and read this.

You need to look closely at the weather forecast.
Between now and Saturday it looks good.
Sunday is looking like 15 to 20 knots on the beam for you.
And there is some very strong wind forecast for next week.

It is quire likely that we will be in Es Trenc from Friday for a couple of days but thats very weather dependant.
Some of our group want to go to Cabrera - which would work if the wind is strong at the end of the weekend.
Very much a "moving feast" at the moment.

If we go to Ibiza, we would be on anchor rather than use a marina.

We were visiting Port Andriano yesterday and the heavens opened up , then swung by Palma Nova beach , now on beach bar in Portals . Can see a few anchored there from here.

Mike, what websites are you using for your weather forecasts?

Personally, I use a subscription to Windguru - www.windguru.cz
But we all use www.passageweather.com
Others use different sites and some of the more hardened yachties use Grib Files

I suggest that you look at Passage Weather ( www.passageweather.com )
There is some nasty stuff being forecast for the end of next week - but thats a long time away to get an accurate forecast.

We are more confident that we will be in the Trenc from Friday for a couple of nights.
The Trenc (aka Rapita or Es Trenc) is very much on your way to CD

Here is a Google Maps link to Es Trenc - thats where we will be (we think - at the moment)

Thanks Mike et al.

See my Anyone want a flight to Valencia on Friday for about £30 thread for the latest balls up with this shipment! :( :(

Omg you are having a bad experience, I took mine to cala D'or in June and whilst it was hard work getting it on the boat once it was we had a pretty straight forward delivery. I'm over on the 29th if you are there for a beer, I'm sure you will need one by then! Good luck

I was the crew! Flights booked and so on and the ship half way across has been diverted to Nice, then Gandia several days later.

i know ships are unreliable but this is really taking the p!

Yes, its bad enough that seven star screwed me over but poor jrudge who kindly volunteered to help has got right royally screwed up too. Hope your weekend gets back on track J.

Next Tuesday
Thats about as bad as the predicted weather gets.

If that bad weather "pans out" we will be safely "tucked up" in a marina - Andratix is the most likely venue but it might be San Antonio in Ibiza.
Just depends

But it is like a millpond here in Palmanova tonight.

All things being equal (although they have all been unequal so far) we should be in Ibiza on Tuesday night. The weather looks quite benign between the mainland and Ibiza on that day. Wednesday Ibiza to CD. This is all provided the ship arrives Tuesday and we get going in time. I can cope with a Wednesday arrival but if it goes back to Thursday I am well and truly bollocksed because of other commitments.

I was supposed to be 2nd crew but unfortunately return flights didn't work.... that would have been a bugger!

PEJ, wishing you best of luck on your trip and hope everything smooths out... it always works out in the end, just sit back and be patient... it'll all be worth it when onboard!

Not sure how your delivery is progressing but watch out - there are some nasty isolated thundery rain storms about.
We were in Cabrera last night and have headed back to Santa Ponsa for the night.
Had to alter course to miss a stormy patch but a yachtie friend had to go right through - he was hit by 40 knot winds

So be careful - the weather is very unsettled.

EDIT - A couple of pics showing a radar view of the isolated storms that are about at the moment.

Consequently, we have decided to cut our cruise short and head home to Sant Carles tomorrow (Sunday)
Might pop into Cala Basset for a swim tomorrow morning before we cross.
Should be one of those idyllic crossings if the weather forecast can be trusted.

I'm disappointed because I was trying to include Ibiza on this trip.
However, I've got some great drone footage from nice anchorages when the weather was good.
So, not all is lost.
I will post them later when I've had time to edit them.

Anyway, have a safe trip and don't go if the forecast isn't favourable.

Along with being robbed on the beach a Portals while swimming we got caught in the beach bar when the heavens opened up yesterday , hiding in the beach bar the rain came so wifey decides on another round , I asked did we have enough cash ? She looked and that had gone too along with my recently purchased Tag watch, so I was nominated to return to the hotel in the storm to collect cash from the safe , managed to find a small carrier bag for a few notes as they would have been paper mac be without. Fab place but sad end to a great holiday , I just hope Aviva are going to be kind when I dig out the house insurance policy !
Weather was that bad yesterday flights were diverted to Palma hence we had 2 hour delay this morning on our return flight.

Mike,

Is that just regular radar picking up the storms or a doplar radar weather feed?

in other words will I pick that up on my radar?

Nothing very special with my radar - although it is a 48 inch digital scanner.

IIRC, (and it is still the same system) your RL80 should be able to pick out the rain storms in a similar way.

Something that we learned on this trip - the "blobs" on the radar are associated with the rain clouds and not the rain showers (rain) itself.
Obvious really - just look up and you can see the rain pattern matches up with the dark clouds.
The actual rain doesn't seem to appear on the radar - well not on mine anyway.

Good luck - weather forecast is improving but there is still some nasty swell - don't make your weather decisions on wind alone - factor in the swell and particularly the rain patches.
www,passageweather.com is particularly useful in this respect.

BTW - we decided not to run back to Sant Carles.
Currently we are at anchor in Santa Ponsa - may move round to Andraitx in the middle of the week and cross back to Sant Carles at the end of the week.

Take care.

Agreed ref the RL80, my furuno analogue radar is even older but does that nicely.

Ref clouds vs. rain, I believe it's just a matter of water density - and sensitivity tuning, of course.
I very much doubt that you wouldn't see heavy rain on your radar, if it weren't that there are dark clouds above it.
Though it's hard to make a countercheck I reckon, 'cause we would need heavy rain pouring down from clear sky....

I don't want to be a "kill joy" but I think you may have to wait until next weekend now.
I've just checked Erasmusgracht current positikn and she is still north of Mallorca.
If she unloads early Tuesday there might be a small opportunity of making a dash but with a swell of up to 1m against you and headwinds later of 15 to 20 knots.
I wouldn't do it - even in our larger boat.
Unfortunately, the situation is deteriorating seriously with big swells of up to 3m on Wednesday.
It doesn't look like it will clear until the weekend.

Although we will be in the lee, we will probably go in to Andraitx for a couple of days and wait for the sea to settle until crossing back tk SC.

Good luck but I think it would be best for you to plan a later delivery trip.

Boat due in 9pm tonight.

If unloaded an early start Tuesday with the option to stop in Ibiza ( and the fly home ) looks plausible but Wednesday is on the forecast a no go.

It's about 130 miles so can be done in a day with no problem but the forecast does deteriorate.

Palma as opposed to Cala dor will knock a bit of distance off in need.

Sure we will get updates.
