Anyone got any up to date info on depths for crossing sunk sand? We are returning from an extended cruise in the next month or so, and will be coming up to Brightlingsea from Ramsgate. We last crossed the sunk 2 years ago, and there was reasonably depth at half tide not too far north east of the beacon. Have things changed much?

Apart from the download info that MoodySabre has pointed you at, you need to know that the Sunk Beacon has collapsed since you saw it last, and is now a completely submerged obstruction.

We have things called tides here, perhaps you recall? If you need a hand working them out let us know :D. Not used the crossing point you showed me since May 2009 but not heard of any difficulties in that area.

No, we havent forgotten the date, and are still very much up for it. It will be good to see everone after so long. I vaguely remeber tides, but whether or not I can remember how to do them is another question! We'll see if we can bump over in the same place as last time and see what happens.

Miles, if crossing by the site of the old Sunk Beacon (well clear of the wreckage obviously) bear in mind that the North-east finger of the Middle Sunk seems to be extending further north east so it is now due north of the position of the collapsed beacon. This gives a false sense of having reached the edge of the Barrow and if you turn to head for the Spitway immediately depth begin to increase, this will put over over this shallow finger with very little water. Hold your course north until well into the Barrow before turning. Sorry I can't give any Lat/Longs but I am at 20 degrees South and for some inexplicable reason didn't bring any charting stuff with me.

If anyone cares, it's windy, grey, raining here at present. Mind you it is 25 degrees C at 6pm!

I'll second that - that's what I saw when I crossed earlier this year.

A lat/long to clear said Middle Sunk finger to the N might be 51deg 40.38N 001deg 20.09E, which I passed on to Roger a few weeks ago based on the plotter track on a friend's boat.
 
Look, I'm not having a good day over here; I can't help it if I can't work it out proper. Miles Gruntle sounds a good name to me. Anyway, it was 'This is Captain Over Over' wasn't it?

Mind you if I'm thinking I had a bad day, spare a thought for this guy. Yesterday we overran a pretty tedious meeting on performance targets and the guy in charge of the section asked for an extra meeting this morning. So I gets up early for the extra meeting, gets into HQ and we sit there for over an hour putting back the next meeting until the guy turns up without a by your leave. I then rather unfortunately point out that this years targets are b**ll**ks since he has set national targets based on data which includes loads of things not to be included in the data so rather than serious failure on the targets which he told us about yesterday which prompted the extra meeting this morning, they are going to better their target by some 45% in year one when in year 2 and 3, their target is only 5%. This afternoon, the poor guy was transferred to the worst operational post in the Island!

Only 62 pages of turgid policy to review tonight! And its raining again. Mind you still 25 degrees!
