Crossing North Sea - how dumb?

I'm not sure which is worse, the fact that his crossing sounds horrendous, or the modestly understated style which makes me think that it was probably even less pleasant than he describes /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Unfortunately there are similar tales, perhaps not written with such unassuming style, in waters just about wherever there are sailing boats. On a longish passage the weather has ample opportunity to turn grumpy, particularly in more northern waters but perhaps equally so in the Mediterranean.

I usually enter the canal system at Lubeck in the southern Baltic then motor to the Rhine then down Rhine to Holland then to Flushing. It is called the "chicken run" but with the mast on deck it is a pleasant run. Good depth all the way as it is commercial unlike the French canals. I find it is actually quicker and more certain than playing the weather. I also don't like the oil rigs out there.

It sounds very pleasant, but I like the Frisian Islands, and locks drive me barmy after a few days! And Flushing isn't that much closer to Scotland than Denmark...
