By the way, I reckon passages were far quicker 30 years ago when more crews knew what they were doing. Then 3/4 of the boats would be from the Clyde and well used to the canal; now most seem to be visitors and the faff level is up.

...and you got five boats to a lock which meant that you could easily get through in a day. My blood boils if I'm in with a 40'+ boat with only two aboard and the man, why is it always the man that refuses to get off and help his five foot and five stone wife with the gates, sorry this has the beginnings of a canal rant.....

Oh yes indeed. With proper shaped boats my wee Jouster was the diamond in the middle of the five and it all went well. Now the sailing yachts going through are mostly so fat-arsed that they can't go side by side. I blame the English, from general principle.

Came up behind a beautiful classic last year. Three men on board, one wife ashore. Luckily Hugh managed to persuade them to dispose their resources more sensibly.
