I would agree that assisted passage should be optional and there was always the option of hiring pilots. I always find willing helpers and usually enjoy the canal, would estimate approx. 100 transits now since I was a nipper. However, I am currently put off by the increased rates and the reported slow transits, so when I return south in the autumn, the MoK is looking good. A shame since I like to support the canal.
