Friend looking for (2) crew for moving boat from Falmouth to Gibraltar early July. Where is the best place for that sort of thing. I have found one or two sites which look a bit deadly.

Re: my thoughts exactly...

i have seen some crew sites that appear to be unnoficial dating agencies for randy old boat owners to get a youngish woman

some that seem to want your money but for very little other than to input your detials on an already overcrowded web site.

but none that appear deadly??????????

i am sure if you were put it on the wanted here you'd get a few offers.

crew seekers is generally well thought of

One was a collection of old postings, with users having been there ages ago. The other was expecting dosh up front, with no idea of quality. 'Deadly' was not chosen particularly thoughtfully, I think I was going to use the expression dead-and-alive, but I am not sure if that means the same thing to all - rather like cheap at half the price, which doesn't mean that at all !!

CA requires membership or dosh up front - has anyone any first or second-hand experience? My pal is a bit short of dosh, as he is retired on a relatively small pension. I will now go look at Crewseekers.....ta.

I'd guess posting here and on BYM should do the job for nothing: Now for a few hard questions your friend will have to sort out in his own head before advertising:

1) Is he looking for CREW (helm, trim, know IRPCS, boil a kettle under way, put a position on a chart from a GPS fix....) or HELP (an experienced skipper who has done the trip before to hold his hand and fill the gaps in his knowledge and experience)? The people dynamics of the two situations are totally different.

2) Is it basically a delivery (get there asap with perhaps 48 hours R&R in Bayona) or the start of a very long holiday (stop EVERYWHERE, day trip to Santiago da Campostella...)

3) Is he in manana mode where days don't matter or can he still remember that some of us have to be back at work on Monday fortnight? If he's in manana mode his crew will have to be retired, unemployed or students. If he takes wage slaves he'll have to move heaven and earth to get them to a railhead for Malaga/Faro on the agreed date.

thank you

for a very useful reminder that we are not all the same. it always comes as a shock to us when crew have to be at a set point at a set time. it puts the lid on 'it's nice here, let's stay another day'

i see from your profile that you've sailed on the lord nelson: they always make it to the next port on time, rather essential with 80 people booking travel to and from the ship. their secret seems to be leaving enough time to avoid being rushed. (i suppose it also helps being solid enough to put to sea in a force 10 if necessary).
