Took another bunch of youthful novices sailing this weekend, which I quite enjoy. I seem to have done a lot of it lately.

It's always a source of joy and entertainment to see a novice look in bewilderment at the array of ropes etc, and then to slowly see the light bulbs coming on as they gain experience and as some of the mystery evaporates.

However, this weekend I though a couple of the youngsters were a bit 'over-familiar' towards me. Can't quite put my finger on it, but it unsettled me. Anyone else experienced this, and how do you deal with it?
 
Fairly head-on i think. It depends on er exactly what they did to be "familiar".
I spose if they call you "pal" or "mate" you haulem up short and say that they can call you "skipper", for example. How exactly were they too familiar, you old pooftah?
 
Their over-familiarity might be a sign that they want to be accepted as essential crew. I suppose you might give them something to do that is a bit tough like the nav or checking the engine. Whether or not they can do it, you at least gettem on their own and then say look, so that everyone feels equal on board, you must call me Tom (or Skipper) ok?
 
You're probably right, but perhaps I'm just being over-sensitive and should learn to live with it?

Didn't get the warm glow you previously enthralled us with on here then.

Youngsters are very perceptive and so quick to learn. What used to take 'Two years before the mast' and years of doing, they will pick up in a very short time.

Glad to see you use fall arrest harnesses on those up the mast in bosun's chair. I mean you would show you really are a complete self-assured idiot if you put a pic on here showing a vulnerable young person just dangling from your halyard without ensuring their safety should your bit of rope part.

Your boat is too small to be anything but familiar, double the size and behave yourself they might drop the Captain Birds Eye/Pugwash and call you - well something else. Get a Bosun's whistle you know Sound of Music stuff. Bet you'd find some supporters for that!

Otherwise, ask Wifey to have a word with them! She, will command respect and it will be given gladly.

You do get em though.

Kids, and I reckon most people single and under thirty fall into that catagory, are always trying it on, testing limits and posturing to their peers. You can confront it, adjust it or ignore it. It depends if it's an important issue.

I don't really care what they call me. Tom works for me. I'm useless remembering names myself so I understand people using the first thing come into their head. It's a bit hard to take exception to being addressed informaly if you just
said "Oi you. Yes the ginger one. Pull that green rope."

I find you get more respect the more the wind blows. It might help if you just tell em to call you skipper in your briefing.
