My pal has bought a used crane for his boat, the issue is that it has a 24 volt hydraulic pump.
Should he change the pump to a 12 volt one - very expensive or could he get 24 volt (lorry) Battery or put 2
12 volt Batteries in series ?
How could he charge the Batteries?
Any ideas very welcome.

I imagine for a crane that the current could be pretty high. You may be able to find a DC-DC steup device to drive 24v from 12v battery (but the current may be too much). The other option, as you mention, is to use 2*12v batteries, and use a battery-to-battery charger (for example) that takes 12v in and charges a 24v bank.

Not sure which would be best between the above or changing the pump.....

Thanks, that's good information,as it happen I was talking to a mate tonight, who has just worked out, his starting battery is only charged from his alternator, this might be just what he needs.
Cheers
