A good friend used to have one a few years back and I spent a fair bit of time on it. I thought it was well put together with a reasonable layout but not very beamy. It performed very well. I don't think it was that easy to sell on in the UK.
A good alternative to a phantom 38/40 if you are looking to save some cash.
Well made with the conventional two cabin layout. Unlike the Zaffiro 34 didn't sell widely in the uk new so will achieve less than the fair lines listed above. That said you get a much newer boat for less cash and as long as you accept that when you sell as well as buy you'll be ok.
If I recall, weak areas are lower helm visibility and flybridge layout
I had a 48 flybridge for over 5 years and it was excellent boat with loads of extras and good value for money, mine had volvos 480 and was a bit under powered but still an excellent boat.
I am not particularly amazed by the Atlantique 38/40.
The good things:
- good CoG
- superb location of engines and shaft angle (think it was only like 12 deg)
- rather spacious and the 40 has a nice size bathing platfrom (most 38s in the med have been modified like 40s)
- great and reliable Volvo Tamd 63s 370hp engines (late models have D6)
38 became the 40 in year 1998
Negatives
- rolls a lot on anchor, I think the boat is to much heavy up top (considering the lower profile of the hull)
- hull is nothing special and I think it is just okay in head seas and same in following, not so good is beamy seas
Build quality is good as is usual for Cranchi.
Do not get me wrong the 40 Atlantique was good when in introduced as 38 in 1997 to compete with the like of the Fairline 37 Phantom and Princess 360 and or Azimut 36 etc
But I think what came after from these other builders see Princess 40, Fairline 38 Phantom, Azimut 39 was a step better in design.
Saying all this it is fair to say that it was a success for Cranchi selling I think 500 plus units in a 12/13 year production run.
For the price they sell (most sell at 100k plus (recent models at 150k or over) I think I would try to snatch a Princess 40 and or Azimut 39
