We went over to Cowes yesterday and planned to stay in East Cowes but there were full so went into Cowes Yacht Haven.

Thry put put us on to S2 which was a little rolly when we get there but a few hours later was really bad so we headed off back to Gosport in the evening. How can anybody stay there when it is that rolly?

Yes, I had a rolly night two weeks ago in a north easterly, not sure how much of a difference the new breakwater has made.

How is it they are full this time of year? If it was Cowes week I could understand, or is it they sell cheap winter berths to those who rent a buoy for the summer.

I was with my parents in the late 70s when it was Groves and Gutteridge and the marina was far more exposed than it is today on our Dagless Fleur de Lys. The weather turned bad and the pontoon started to break up and the marina staff asked us to leave at midnight, there was a woman screaming on the boat in front. We had to cut the ropes with an axe and go for it. Luckily we didn't hit anything and went down the Medina and tied up to a barge for the night.

Interesting, we stayed a couple of weeks ago on B1 in the north basin on a fairly windy day and felt that the breakwater had made a really big difference as apart from the wash from the ferry it was so much less rocky than it used to be.

Last date of the winter season yacht races. Quite a big event. Should be very quiet from here on.

How odd. We are based in Gosport Marina so are used to getting a good rocking from the ferries but in CYH it was pretty much a constant motion that was making SWMBO feel seasick.

Only time I've been sea sick on the boat was at CYH. That will be our first and only over night stay there.

But.......

We love it as a day time destination and find it perfectly located and the staff super friendly.

You are right about the location, I didn't miss the long walk from East Cowes but wont be going there again.

I have had a few rocky times there and when you are rocking in a marina you usually look at the water and see waves coming past but in CYH the water in the marina always seems to be calm. I think the ferries make the big concrete pontoons rock up and down and they, in turn, make the wooden pontoons go up and down and that pulls on your ropes and makes your boat rock.

Think you are right there, the water did look calm so perhaps it was down to pontoon dance.

Same here. Incidentally, it was an identical boat as yours.

I've seen much larger boats roll around in there - mostly on the inside of the outer pontoon in the north basin, but even right in front of the office.

Good pubs, good restaurants, best location, always something happening, nice people, reasonable price oh and we like it but best avoided in strong north easterlies otherwise fine, neil
