I m not going to be there to see the start, but what sort of time are the lead boats likely to be back in the Solent?

From the Cowes Harbour Commission LOCAL NOTICE TO MARINERS NO 12(T) OF 2009

The following are the anticipated finishing times for the two races:
Honda Cowes Poole Cowes: Finishers expected between 1045-1115
Class 3 Cowes Poole Cowes: Finishers expected between 1130-1200
Cowes Torquay Cowes: Finishers expected between 1200-1300

Which forecast?

I was thinking of going out to watch the start, which would mean getting out of bed quite early, but having now seen the forecast for Saturday, I think I'm more likely to turn over and go back to sleep. :(

which forecast you looking at?

I'll be out safety boating for the race.

Cowes Torquay

http://www.windguru.cz is predicting a F3 so it should be fine - get yourself down past the Solent Bank Buoy [the startline] for 10.15 and well over to one side or tother to see them all go off at once, it'll be well worth it.

I'll be safety boating as well [trying not to bump into Ben] - if I can sort out a small matter of a lost 500rpm on my starboard engine... cam timing out maybe?

Here we are on a sunny day

Not taking any definite decision until tomorrow evening. If I do go out, the plan is to head down to north of the start line (from Beaulieu), then probably go into Newtown for an hour or so before going down to Hurst to watch everyone coming back into the Solent. If I'm out there, I'll keep an eye open for you and Ben. :)

Because of what it is, it will be lumpy anyway, CTC always attracts a lot of spectator vessels as well as safety marshals craft, a lot of traffic in a confined space, not to mention the normal traffic of merchantmen, ferries, high speed jets, and the reason they are all there, the competitors.

It'll be a great day out, Mayhem on the Solent as usual.

Weather...

We'll see how the weather pans out.

Tomorrow eve we'll be blasting over to Cowes, most forecasts say 3 to 4, except me office that says 5-6-7, so we'll see!

I wonder why the met office is 2 B'fort points above the others.

In fairness, Selsey Bill to Lyme Regis is a large area to apply a blanket forecast to, and the wind around the headlands is going to be higher than in the shelter of the Solent, so I guess they're predicting worst case for the area. They've moderated their opinion somewhat - now saying 4-5-6. Metcheck and Windguru both seem to be implying 3 or 4 with an occasional bit of 5 in the Solent itself, so that's not entirely incompatible. Very neapy, so the effects of wind over tide will be muted. Mind you, as Epervier says, every time I've been out to watch the start of a CTC it's been mayhem anyway.....

Sorry - just talking to myself, really! :)

Always interesting to read others interpererppretations of the forecast.

Always interesting to read how others view the 4cast. Looks like a bumpy/wet ride across tonight.
