I want to send a TMP gearbox to a fellow forumite. It weighs 50kg and has dimensions of 30x40x50cm.
I checked on my interparcel site and found that a palleted item had to be shrink wrapped which I cant do.
I then checked if I could send it as an ordinary parcel and was surprised to see ( after putting in that weight and dimensions that I could.
I would propose to fasten it down to a ply base and then cover the sides and top with packaging, cling film and cardboard.
It is a blinking heavy parcel and I wonder if the driver will be happy to lift it ( its a strain for me but I am approaching 80!)
has anyone else any experience with this sort of package?

I think "shrink wrapped" doesn't mean exactly what it says. I've had a number of palleted deliveries which have just been wrapped in clingfilm, which you say you can do.

I sent a bucket which fits on a fork lift by "Pallet Line," it must have weighed 250 kilo, I put it on a pallet and tied it down to the pallet. I did have a fork lift to load it on their curtainsider With your gearbox I would just get a pallet, throw it on the truck and tie the gearbox down to the pallet. Forget shrink wrapping.

I've just had a tool trolley weighing 45kg delivered by A Bloke in a Van. As well as parcel services (I normal check parcelmonkey and parcel2go) it might also be worth trying a carrier portal like shiply. Their carriers are generally slower, because they have to be passing, but my other half has just had a heavy electric bike delivered from the south of England t the south of Scotland for under £50.

Wrapping film is dead cheap on Amazon: Realpack Clear Pallet Stretch Wrap Cling Film 400mm x 250m: Amazon.co.uk: Office Products

Shiply is pretty handy. I've used them for several gearboxes, but also furniture and ludicrously heavy granite worktops. Don't rush to accept the first bids and don't expect the Queen's English in the driver's messages.

A driver should certainly not be "lifting" 50kg. It might be OK if your package will balance safely on a sack truck. If not a pallet is the way to go.

I shipped a gearbox by DHL a few months ago.

Just make sure you drain it of oil first.

I recently had a car door for an old jag sent from West London
to N. Essex. Came by a man in a van and cost me £80 . Took two of us to lift it.

I had to ship a big electric motor recently (25kg) and made a custom crate with grab handles made from old halyards. Cost about £20 in 8mm ply with some 4x2 and a load of screws. It was attached to a gearbox and I didn't want to drain the oil so filled the bottom with nappies (makes a change from filling the nappies with bottom). Marked it with couple of laminated 'This Way Up' signs.' Standard courier no problem.

Speedshift might be worth a look for delivery.

Pallet film is stretch wrap. If you get a roll, you'll find a dozen uses for it A shrink-wrapped pallet is a different thing but still possible at home with a warm air gun.

When getting prices, check if there's a premium for non-stackable.

Secure it to the pallet, poundshop cam straps would do.

Edit: pallet should reduce chance of it being dropped which might be catastrophic!
