My mate tells me that it is illegal to fl;y a Dorset flag from my UK SSR reg. yacht. Is this true?

You can fly any flag you like as long as it's only hung on the port side flag halyard.

However I tend to disagree.....bottle of Grants later..
He also states that we - that is private yachts are subject to merchant vessal flag regs?? B*&*^ks or not??

I believe it's a criminal offence under the Merchant Shipping Act 1993 to display the Union Flag (other than the Pilot Jack) from a non-naval British ship. This evidently had its origins in the habit of vessels flying the flag to avoid paying harbour dues, which sadly doesn't work any more. Anything else, so far as I know, is OK.

You can fly what you want, including your favourite grundies, from the port flag halyard. It's what you hang on the staff at the back that is likely to get you in trouble. Me, I'm happy with the red ensign. Every time I put it there I think of two uncles I never met who died on Atlantic convoys.

He's right, I'm wrong - I didn't think properly before replying! I'm so used to seeing so many different flags hung portside at anchor and in marinas - which is generally acceptable.
At sea however, he's correct in that it shouldn't be flown although many do so, particularly those who are sailing under a foreign flag but want people to know the crews nationality.
I'm not a stickler for flag etiquette but, I have seen people pulled by French and Portuguese police and told in no uncertain terms to fly the correct ensign.
One Brit (in a marina) in France was made to drop his Jolly Roger under threat of fine, his excuse that it was to amuse his grandchildren didn't impress them.

Hardly surprising. Whilst we may be laid back about these things the French aren't. It just seems courteous to respect their ways; when in Rome and all that. Maybe they should have been teaching that to the grandchildren.

As long as you fly a red (or if you are entitled to it, blue or white) ensign when you are supposed to do so - entering and leaving ports - then you can do what you like with a Dorset flag. You aren't allowed to fly other distinctive national colours but a Dorset flag isn't distinctive national colours. For a yacht, nobody in authority cares what you do.
There are different and often stricter rules abroad, as others have pointed out.

I saw on you Tube footage of the 2009 St.Barts Bucket Regatta.
There was a charter boat taking part. It is an Ed Dubois design, like mine,, only this one is LOA 39 Metres...Charter costs 80,000 euros a w
. Blue hull, ketch rig, blue sails.
The significance is that all the crew were decked out in Gibraltar colours (red shorts, white shirts) and the ensign was the Gibraltar flag (red and white with a yellow castle and key).
I am trying to find out more, no luck so far.
