I would have thought that as long as it's not taken off the boat on the other side then it hasn't been exported.

You have to ensure that all rubbish (incl empty Fray Bentos tins) are brought back to the UK.

Ah, well, there's always horsemeat. But how are we going to live without Stilton?

I have a mental image of sailors pouring the last of their milk overboard as they approach Cherbourg, and heaving to for a moussaka fest.

Re: As they approach Cherbourg\"???

Or the Isle of Man even . . .
Wise up Mark, this is a country-wide ban.
I have visions of Douglas police lining up to arrest you for being drunk in charge of a sarnie.
Or is it cross-posting to include TWO crimes in one submission?

But wot if the contents of the FB tins have been consumed and "evacuated" - does one have to bring back one's excreta?
Beyond a joke - OK, I can understand that foreign custioms could get a bit iffy if you landed a live cow, but "meat products"?

From the Defra web site:-

Personal Exports are produce is taken out of GB by travelers. This includes parcels sent abroad containing food for personal consumption. Personal exports are different from commercial exports, for which special controls apply.

Foot and mouth disease presents no risks to humans but does pose a serious threat to animal health. It can be spread through a variety of food products which could carry the disease. As a precautionary measure, the European Union has introduced emergency rules to restrict export of potentially susceptible products from the UK. We are urging people to play their part in trying to prevent disease spreading between countries.

Fresh meat, meat products, fresh milk or milk products from animals which are susceptible to foot and mouth disease should not be taken or posted abroad. It is impossible to draw up a comprehensive list of every banned food but some examples are bacon, sausages, ham (and sandwiches or pizza containing these), soups containing meat pieces, cheese, cream, butter, milk powder, yoghurt and ice-cream. These rules also apply to pet food and fish bait.

Some products containing milk and milk products which have been subject to further processing which involves cooking and products which do not contain meat/milk of susceptible species are permitted. It is hard to give a definitive list but examples are margarine, mayonnaise (not containing dairy products), soya milk, cereals (not containing dairy products), cooked ready meals and soups not containing meat/milk of susceptible species. Chocolate biscuits and cakes (not containing cream) which are finished products may be taken. Drinks such as tea, coffee and fruit juice are also OK. This also includes baby milk.

Milk products for medicinal use fall outside the scope of the EU ban on personal exports of dairy products. For example, this means that products for intravenous gastronomy use are permitted. It is however, advisable to take a doctors note explaining what the product is and what it is used for. However, other countries are understandably taking a very cautious approach and there is no guarantee that products will not be confiscated by foreign customs if they deem them to be a risk.

As with normal customs practises, vehicles and passengers can be subject to spot checks. Because of the foot and mouth outbreak it is increasingly likely that you may be asked if you have food products in your possession and that your car may be disinfected. Practises vary from country to country and even within each country, so we are unable to give advice on individual countries and their borders.

Oh hell! this now causes me something of a dilemma, I'm about to start storing up for the start of an Atlantic circuit and now all the tinned meats are off the shopping list. Looks like its gonna be a trip with no FB pies this could seriously affect the crews morale.

Unfortunately the virus survives being made into many meat products & freezing, milk pasturisation etc - thats how the last outbreak started!!!!

(Contaminated meat or meat product going into improperly cooked pig swill; into the pigs then into the local sheep which spread it to all parts of the country before it was noticed 'cos they don't show symptoms)
