Cote d'Azure Aug/Sep from 'down under'

After Laser arrives in Auckland at the end of November I will have to make the trip to Picton via Tauranga, Gisborne, Napier and Wellington.
I apologise beforehand for a possibly silly question, but wouldn't it be an option, when unloading the boat, truck her straight to Onehunga and reach Picton from the E side of the N island?
Without checking on the map, by heart I would think that the route should be much shorter.
Mind, I'm saying this with no clue about average weather conditions, fuel availability etc.

Hi Ben,

The boat is berthed in front of the SMN boat yard. From what I'm told, it is on the south side of the Grand Canal just opposite the Ile de Pins.

It would be fantastic if you could take a photo for me and post it here as I've had lots of trouble getting photos from SMN even though it is in their maintenance afloat programme...

Cheers

James.

Hi MapisM,

I'm no expert but the Manakau harbour has a notoriously treacherous bar crossing at the entrance/exit. It is also very tidal and I'm not sure what sort of haul out facilities they have at Onehunga. I believe also that the only viable fuel stop is Port Taranaki which is very weather dependant and the west coast weather can be brutal at times...

By all accounts the favoured route is via the east coast but it is certainly something I'll investigate further closer to the time.

Cheers.

For your trip along the coast here is a link to a trip I did in May which covers a bit of the journey you are taking http://www.ybw.com/forums/showthread.php?500757-May-Cruise-to-St-Tropez&highlight=Mcanderson

And the next two links are for some of the ports where you can book online.

http://www.riviera-ports.com

https://www.portdebeaulieu.com/en/

We are in Beaulieu and can highly recommend it. Very good facilities, shops transport links etc.

As others have said San Remo is great and I’m sure you will enjoy it.

If you need any recommendations feel free to pm or post here and someone will have an answer for you.

Thanks for all the great info. I'll be sure to add Beaulieu to the list.

Cheers

James.

Aha, I see.
One thing is for sure: regardless of the route, that's a trip with a fantastic potential for making a memorable report.
If you will have the time and wish to post about it, I'm sure I wouldn't be alone in following it with great interest! :encouragement:

Now that I know there is some interest I will definitely continue to post about it.

Hi James, what’s your boat’s name/make? I’m just around the corner from you on the church side of Rue De I’le Longue, I’ve got a grey V39

Regards Jerry (not Ben, that’s my user name)

James,

Best of luck for your adventure. I am also a kiwi and we have thought of doing a similar thing in the future. For now we will enjoy the Hauraki Gulf in our baby Tristram 851

Cheers,

Mark

Hi Adrian and Jerry,

Thanks for the offers of assistance. Just a quick snap shot of the boat in her berth posted here would be good. She is a Princess 50/3 and the name (although only on the back) is Laser. She's located in front of the SMN boat yard opposite the Ile de Pins.

Probably a lot to ask but if you see a decent second hand dinghy for sale in PG let me know... Inflatable ~2.6-3m with a small and serviceable outboard.. ;-)

Will either of you folks be there in Aug?

Cheers

James.

Hi James, I went over to find your boat at 11 but can’t see it or are you out?

Are you on the outside row or rearing their yard?

Hi Jerry,

I've just sent you a PM however,,,

I just spoke to SMN and lo and behold Laser is not berthed where I thought she was but rather somewhere else in PG. The perils of long distance ownership eh..

When I find out exactly where she is I'll post here...

Cheers

James.
