Cost? To Service a Honda 5HP

Impossible to quote for. Some seized studs and replacement could rack up the hours.

Surely not. Any auto shop will quote for a regular service, so why not with outboards, too? Additional items arising should be itemised and be quoted separately (maybe verbally); if expensive, the additional work should not be done without the customer's say-so.

But I agree with most above that it should be a DIY job. It's simple enough and, apart from saving money, the familiarisation exercise might stand you in good stead.

You don't say if it's a 2 or a 4 stroke... assuming no structural issues, my 4HP 2 stroke was about £90 this year...
It's a Honda, so it's a 4 stroke.

I was suggesting the answer to the question, which was not "What is the menu price?" but "Rough Cost? To Service a Honda 5HP?"

My first reaction, too, since Honda's excursions into stinkwheel territory in other fields have been reluctant and relatively few. However, to my surprise I see they've made plenty of such outboards in the past, although whether in 2002, I've no idea.
Honda have never made a two stroke outboard motor, they did make a very nice NSR 400 2T, but that was a motorbike.

I think the service cost is way over the top, no one mentioned tappets, presumably the 5 hp has them?

I think probably you're right: I'd Googled "Honda 2-stroke outboard" and to my surprise got loads of hits, including from companies wanting to sell me workshop manuals for same. I suspect that may be due to spurious/ignorant search terms and listings.

If you wish to give examples if genuine (and successful) Honda 2-strokes, I'd suggest their grand prix bikes, might be more fertile ground than the 400 you mention. Just ask Mick Doohan. Or Fast Freddie. Or Mr Rossi. And that's not to mention their dirt bikes.

Quite right of course, however, if you remember the 400 was street legal, a delight in its day:)

Just got the receipt out.

The labour on the service was £105, another £75 on parts and then you have to add engine oil, gear oil, anode and disposal charge giving a grand total of £216.

Unfortunately I'm not mechanically minded and with young family don't have the time either, so I just have to grin and take it.
