I wouldn't expect to find a teak deck in the market sector I'm looking in but one of them has which is nice to look at and walk on but a potential big bill in the future. There was an article in PBO, I think, in the last year which gave costs for a 40 footer but I can't find it. I'm guessing anything between £6000 and £12000 for a 33 footer.

The PBO articles were by the Chandlers who re-decked their Rival 38.

I'm just finishing the same sort of project on my Nic39.

It's a big, big job and you need lots of spare time and energy.

I can now see why yards charge what they do for the job.

However, I'm really pleased with the result.

BTW my original deck was over 30 years old and looked OK from 5 feet - it was just getting thin in places.

She spent a good many years in the tropics too (with me & previous owner).

I expect the new one to last just as long.

Yes I read that but there was another bit from one of the PBO writers about getting a yard to do it
- had to do a lot of shopping around to get a reasonable quote.

I paid a shipwright to replace the teak deck on a Tradewind 39.
This was in 2003 and cost £17,000 then, although there is an awful lot of deck on a Tradewind.

The guys up in Conwy are the cheapest -was quoted 14k for a sy41 which has masses of teak. 12mm thickness quoted

I think the article was by Tom Cunliffe on his own yacht. It was YM but I forget which month & year. He got a good deal in Wales somewhere. Seriously big job. You could try emailing him.

Unless it's a classic boat, I'd regard a teak deck as a serious disadvantage, especially if it's starting to look tired. It'd be a hellava lot cheaper to bin the teak, make good and use deck paint. Even that would be a big job, though. Better to get a plastic top from the word go IMO.

If you're thinking I've got no soul, you could be right, but I'd rather go sailing than bust my butt in a boatyard somewhere.

+1

The old how much does it cost question...
It really depends on how much work you are willing and able to do yourself.
Removing fixtures and fittings, ripping/taking up the old one, filling the thousands of holes, making good the deck before laying and of course laying it yourself. All of which is time consuming and as Tradewinds said, I understand why yards take 'high' price for the job and that's all without the actual purchase of the teak which isn't cheap in itself.
But you are definately looking in the region of £20k
