Cost of re-engining?

Could somebody give me an idea of the cost of re-engining; a new engine and professionally fitted - very basic ball park figure only. I'm thinking of taking out a Yanmar 1GM10 and replacing with a new 2 cylinder 14hp Beta, I'm assuming new shaft and prop, exhaust, various ancillaries.

I'm been trying to guestimate for making an offer on a Mk1 Crabber, I have assumed £7k, is this too little?

I can't find any price list for Beta's.

Thanks

IanC

There is an article in the November YM on installing a Beta 30 which comes in just short of 10.5k. On that basis I would consider upping your estimate a bit, but if the engine you are taking out is a runner I would also reckon on selling that on for between 1k and 2k.

A general rule for a full installation is engine price doubled.

No, it is not too little. You may well find you have £1,500 to £2,000 left over.

This assumes you pay a sensible price for the engine, find no serious and/or structural stuff to do and do not get seen off by the fitter.

cost of engine

Good article in November yachting monthy. £6400 paided for Beta30, boat show special i think. Chap replaced everythink , total cost£10394. Cost included engine fitting. Well worth a read.

I replaced a 1GM10 with a Beta 14 in early 2010. The engine came with the Boat Show discount.

Engine, waterproof panel, shallow sump, high rise exhaust - £3,463.23

Remove old engine, build new engine beds (aluminium), new inlet seacock, new water strainer, new waterlock, 3-bladed propeller, minor repair to fuel tank, service Aquadrive coupling with new bearings - £2,319.60

Why would you want to replace the shaft?

I subsequently replaced the fixed 3-blader with a Featherstream - a bit of a luxury at £1,085.60, but very easy to fit myself and makes a big difference to drag when sailing.

A couple of years ago I had a quote from a well - known East Coast firm to put a new engine in my Centaur, £9,200. As this was nearly double what I had paid for the boat I declined their kind offer. If my efforts at fixing the old engine have not worked then for that price I can buy another Centaur which has been re-engined and is in better condition than mine!
Most of the cost was in installing the extras which were not considered essential 40 years ago but which are now. Depending on how old your boat is you may get away with just slotting a new engine in rather than having the inlet pipe enlarged, exhaust renewed, anti syphon valve installed etc. etc.
There was a guy on Boats and Outboards who did a good price on Beta engines, can't remember his name but he was based in Devon or somewhere in the South West.
Good Luck!

I do apologise

Don't be so cruel Dylan.

I do apologise

however, in this case I felt it was okay because no boat has been bought yet

and I used to hate inboard engine threads

they filled me with a genuine sense of fear

now I feel okay about them

more than okay

I don't think I am being cruel though

maybe a bit smug

but I will try to keep my emotions under control

Why are you thinking of a replacement? is the original engine shot..or are you just looking for something with a bit more ooomph?

Bigger is not always better...you may end up wasting horsepower and cash.

If the engine is shot then it will probably cheaper to replace like-for-like if possible , albeit 2nd hand if available, engine mounts, transmission, fuel lines etc can remain...that engine/boat combination may have been the result of a whole set of computations designed to give the best performance, economy etc..linked to the hull shape and length.

Repair is also a more cost effective solution...there is always a way.......I know!

If you want to change the engine just because you want to....then please feel free to spend whatever you want to.

I was quoted just under 5k for removal of my 2GM and installation including new engine mounts etc etc. You'll never recover the outlay though if you sell.

I replaced a sabb with a 16hp beta in 2008/9 (I did most of the removal of the old engine) - new shaft and prop, fuel lines + filter, tidying up of exhaust system, replacement sea cock - came in at around £5000.

Seems to me Dylan that when something goes wrong with your boat you just go and buy a new one. By your current rate of consumption you'll have used up six boats by the time you're not turning left any more.

BTW, loved your last film (I like windmills myself) keep 'em coming.

you are dead right

I had three great years with the slug and the beast

then I struggled for two and threw in the towell

I hear on the grapevine that it now has both forwards and reverse gears

I did some chasing around on replacing the beast and the lowest price I could get it down to was aroun d £5k

to spend that sort of money on a boat and still have a yacht that would be worth £2,500 seemed insane

what about a crabber with an outboard in a well?

I have to say that the outboard arrangement on the new boat means that it handles as well as any inboard

I miss the warmth the engine produced

I do not miss the smell

I miss the noise - when compared to sharing a cockpit with a banshee

I love the idea that I clean my bilges with a dustpan and brush

+1 !!

But...you missed .....'just press a button and it starts'......every time.....any time.......

same for an ouboard ??

They can be complete s@ds sometimes.....

Yher!!....... Diesel rools ok !

Sound ?

Tunka...Tunka....Tunka..... verses......well..... a wasp in a jam jar......

Nuff said ??

I do want more Oomph! Fed up with not even being able to get back into the Walton Channel when the tide turn, currently an Anderson 22 with 5hp Yamaha (which is a brilliant engine IMO).

Really would like to find a Crabber already with a 2GM20, but very rare.

Stuck in France, what went wrong with your 2GM?

BTW, confirmed addict/subscriber to KTL, so appreciate the irony in almost doubling the potential spend by considering a new engine essential.
