Maybe it is a silly question: but how much do you reckon I might have to budget if I wanted to replace Tigger's gearbox? The engine is a Volvo 2030 with a 120S saildrive.

What's wrong with it? I was concerned about ours a few weeks ago. Even more concerned when I saw the price of parts. I've seen reconditioned units on one volvo dealers web site. Try RK marine.

From what I can see in the parts diagram there's very little in them that couldn't be re-built in a competent workshop. Anyone had this done?

Maybe it's a silly answer: but why not ask a Volvo dealer?

Intrigued as to why you would want to replace the gearbox? They are not known to be weak in this application. Mine has done over 2500 hours in the hands of charterers and gives no sign of trouble (says he crossing his fingers). Or do you know something I don't!

Did this on a 2040 saildrive 4 years ago and IIRC it cost approx 3k including lift out - work done by a Volvo dealer. In my case the clutch had gone on forward gear and dealer persuaded me to buy an exchange gearbox as best chance of reliabilty. After I sold boat the whole saildrive leg sheared off outside Cherbourg I suspect due to seizure of prop shaft bearing (leg still at bottom of channel!) Interesting when sea water shoots up out of gearbox dip-stick hole when you go to check the oil level to see why you have no drive !!

Having only had new boats (3 now) and had 6 years of problems with Volvo propellers/saildrive bearings/gearboxes and engines needing replacing guess why I bought the last boat with only Yanmar bits.

Current boat now in 4th year and no problems. On previous boat the new owner bit the bullet and paid a little extra for complete Volvo engine and gearbox to be replaced with a new Yanmar equivalent (needed some extra mods for bearers etc). This boat now in 3rd year with no further probs!!

Good luck but guess what my advice would be.

Tranona,

the reason is that the gears have started to "stick", i.e when engaging reverse they sometimes seize and the only way to deal with it is to turn off the engine and disengage. There are different opinions on why this might be happening. And the cable mechanism is not at fault.

Thanks for the explanation. Can't help with the diagnosis - assume you have done the basic of changing the oil.

As you know, big job to get it out, so something to be avoided if possible.
