Just bought a refill of gas, the largest Camping Gaz size which I think is something like 2.7 kg. It cost just over €30. I was horrified. Last time I bought a refill for my own boat it was around £20 for a 13kg Calor Propane. What price are people paying for gas these days?

I assume you are referring to a "907" Camping Gaz bottle.

Tried to get one in Brighton on Sunday morning. They would have charged just under £20 (I think it was £19.95), but they had sold out. [Aside: largest marina in the country, most popular gas bottle and they didn't have any!]

Ended up buying one from Gosport Marina. £21.50 or thereabouts (don't have my credit card slip to hand but it was something like that).

If your latest purchase was in € then I think you are just feeling the effects of a bad exchange rate.

I just converted to Calor for the same reason Snowey.... I now have provision for Camping Gaz if I desperately need it in France but this year around the UK I reckon I will save Squids by using Calor.....

Afraid that sounds about the going rate for Camping Gaz in my experience also - incredible in comparison to the larger Calor bottles, but I don't have the room for anything bigger in my locker

My locker will only fit Camping Gaz cylinders too. The solution was to hang a Calor cylinder on the pushpit and extend the gas pipework. All the joints are made within the vented locker.

Originally, I thought I'd have to make a platform for the cylinder to stand on. In reality a lashing does the job very well. Gas at half the price and it works in the winter to boot.

We was paying €9 for my last refill here in Greece. We have not bought any since the duty and vat increases were impossed here.

In Croatia last year we paid about €20 and they were getting refilled from their larger bottles and these did not last as long.

Calor Butane swap was around £15 for a 4.5kg Easter time at the marina. We only use the gas for the hob, grill and oven so it will probably last a good few months but our previous boat used Camping Gaz and I remember that it was expensive even a year ago.

Is Gaz the most popular? On boats? I know it's a lot more expensive...

4.5kg butane £17 pounds something at Brighton...

To answer that question, next time you pop into your local chandlery ask them which they sell most of.

I think the majority of modern European volume boat producers use Gaz. Aren't all Bavs fitted with Gaz.

So, yes I believe so.

Suspect some of it may be to do with the compact size of the bottles relative to, say, Calor. Allows a yacht desinger you to squeeze more into a given space and keep the price down. Also, widely available across (most of) Europe.

The problem is that you can't easily buy anything but CG in France or the Med as far as I know but Calor is far cheaper in the UK
